Gunshots On Thursday Night

Shortly before 11pm on Thursday, residents in the area around Hazel and Sunnyside were startled to hear 10-15 gunshots ring out.  It was a nice evening and many people had their windows open, so they could quite clearly hear our local urban terrorists welcome spring in their own special way.

Many calls were made to 911 and police responded within a minute, according to neighbors.  They spent time searching the area with flashlights and speaking to residents.  No one appears to have been hit and we have no reports of property damage.  If we get any updates, we'll let you know.

Several readers wrote to say that the corner of Hazel and Sunnyside was full of people loitering earlier in the evening.  One thing we've learned from CAPS meetings and gang seminars is that Uptown gangs retaliate quickly against other gangs.  Please keep alert for unusual behavior and call 911 if you see anything suspicious.  The cops would rather respond to an alert that turns out to be nothing than have a shooting that could have been prevented.  Be the eyes and ears on your block.

The next CAPS meeting for the area is Wednesday, April 10th, 7pm, at the Clarendon Fieldhouse, 4501 N Clarendon.

  1. Quite a bit of drama at the park yesterday. Several police visits, some broken glass, many arguments. Hope this isn't spillover.

  2. Oh, right by public housing. I'm shocked.

  3. That public housing building is for the elderly. My 85 yr old brother-in-law lives there. I'm sure they were terrorized just as much as everyone else.
