Cheese-y Rumors

For months, we've heard the buzz that the old Manhattan Liquors storefront at Broadway and Buena was set to become an upscale wine store, but we haven't been able to get anyone to confirm.  Until....

... today, when a frequent contributor sent us a legal notice he received Tuesday.  We can't vouch for how high-end it will be, but NORTH BUENA MARKET, a wine and cheese store and deli, has filed an application for a special use permit to operate there.

Hoping to be sipping wine in Buena Park by the time warm weather comes around.

  1. We have no shortage of establishments at which to purchase spirits and wine.

No matter how "high end" it might be, we don't need it.

  2. DW - are you joking? so if you want to stop and pick up some cheese or deli spread and nice wine/beer to take to a party, you think the selections at our current bodegas are fine? Because I have to go to Whole Foods to get something like that, so if you know of a place in Buena Park, do tell.

I'm thrilled to have this place - having lived a block from Provenance in Logan Sq a few years ago, I really miss having a place where they know their stock and can suggest pairings with what they have in their cheese/deli counter.

  3. I don't know where DuneWonk is coming from... but this would be a great edition, particularly compared to what was there (nasty package goods store) and is on the opposing corners (parking lot, 7-11 and a long-vacant former KFC). I'm most intrigued by the full-service deli which would be awesome if it had sandwiches and such; plus, a place nearby to buy decent wine, good cheese and related items would be welcome and a definite upgrade to that corner if it's done right.

    1. The KFC is being turned into a brand new 7-11. I'm curious what will replace the old 7-11 when it moves across the street.

  4. As long as the cheese isn't "flamin hot" it will be an improvement over what used to be there.

  5. Love. Manhattan Liquors wasn't that bad, just the outside looked dumpy. Let's get some nice black or red awnings with white lettering to class this corner up.

  6. low end is right- this will be not a fine wine store or even remotely similar to whole foods- smokes, deli meat and wine. WOW- sounds like a gem.

  7. If they are taking suggestions...McLure's Bloody Mary Mix. McLure's Hot Pickles.

  8. I live just a few steps away and am glad to see something going into this space. The Manhattan in it's hey day actually offered a great variety of wine and beers..It was only in the last couple of years that newer owners took no interest in stocking the shelves with anything but rot gut and wines long past their prime. Why don't we let the place open up before we start dropping our reviews??

  9. I went into North Buena Deli tonight and purchased a delicious Boar's Head sandwich made fresh. They have a nice selection of meats and cheeses. They also have some finer grocery items, and also staples such as organic milk and eggs. A nice shop with friendly staff. I hope it sticks around for years to come. a breath of fresh air on that corner.
