Car Break-Ins In Sheridan Park

Today we heard from two different readers about car break-ins going on in Sheridan Park.  We urge anyone who's been a victim to call the police and make a report so that the police can see a pattern here.  Just from these two e-mails, it's easy to see what area is being targeted.  And we can't emphasize enough that it's not wise to leave anything in your car because you never know what will attract a thief.

It's obviously the same guy or guys doing this, and filing a police report will make it easier for the cops to catch these jerks in the act.  Let's try to get them outta here.

  • "During the past 10 days at least three cars (including ours last night) have been broken into by thieves. Oddly, there were no broken windows and the doors were left slightly ajar. They must have a pretty good way of getting into the vehicles.  They seemed to be looking for money (they took all of our change). They did not seem to take any registration or other information from the car. The offenders followed the same pattern for each car.  The break-ins occurred overnight, but it is not clear when. The cars are located on the alley of the 4400 block of Malden between Malden and Beacon. If you see anything suspicious, call 911."
  • And from another reader:  "A number of cars were broken into (no sign of damage) overnight on the 4400N block of Racine, in a gated parking lot behind Bronco Billy Playlot.  Thieves took iPod cords/chargers, quarters/money and left all the doors ajar.   Kindly post to let other neighbors know to be on the lookout."

  1. Were these designated parking spots in the alley? Were they well lighted? I'm guessing not.

I've lived in the city for 12 years and had my car broken into once, guess where it was parked? In an alley!

  2. This happened to two of my neighbors this weekend in our gated parking lot in the alley of the 4800 block of Kenmore, between Sheridan and Kenmore.

  3. There was a car window broken into during the night of 8/21 by the train tracks on W Montrose...not far from Target. Saw it this morning walking to the train.

The READER...I don't get it...what do you mean? The weekly paper?

  5. Jason, they are parking spaces in private property behind gates, with alley access. Most of the 6- and 8-flats in the area have them. No one is leaving their cars in the alleys overnight.

  6. Jason, sorry to burst your bubble, but you made a bad guess.

The cars in the Malden spots were in a very well lit area in a parking lot. There are even lights pointed directly at the lot.

  7. Someone hopped our fence and broke into one of our garages on Malden. Stole a bike about a month or two ago. The door wasn't locked properly, but still...the thought of someone entering our back area and checking to see if any of the garage doors were open is a little unsettling. It would be one thing if they saw something to steal, but they didn't. They were looking for an easy entry and they found it.

  8. There's also a lot of mangled gas doors on cars. Someone is stealing gas. It seems like its 1 in 6 cars on beacon and Leland. They're using a screwdriver or some other primitive method to pry open the gas door. The metal is warped and the paint gets chipped and scraped off.
