Apna Ghar Sponsors 5K Run/Walk Against Domestic Violence

On Sunday, September 30, 2012 Apna Ghar ("Our Home") will hold its sixth annual Stride Against Violence 5K Run/Walk in Montrose Harbor. The walk raises funds that help domestic violence survivors reclaim and rebuild their lives. The proceeds from the event support Apna Ghar’s shelter, legal services, counseling, and economic empowerment programs for domestic violence survivors.

Stride Against Violence will take place at Chicago’s Montrose Harbor on Sunday, September 30, 2012. Registration will begin at 8am. Approximately 300 runners and walkers will step-off onto the course at 9:30am. Stride Against Violence is a CARA Emerging Race on a USTAF certified course.

Rambha Radhakrishnan, President of Apna Ghar’s Board, says, “I’m so proud to see how Stride Against Violence has grown as more and more Chicagoans of all backgrounds come together to declare that ‘my culture does not tolerate violence.’”

Prizes for the top fundraisers include 2 tickets to the Bruce Springsteen concert in Wrigley Field on September 8.  For more information about Apna Ghar (Our Home) or Stride Against Violence, please visit www.strideagainstviolence.org or contact Ashley Tsuruda at atsuruda@apnaghar.org, 773-334-0173 ex. 226.

"We provide survivors with emergency and transitional shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, case management and economic empowerment services. While our services are open to all domestic violence survivors in the Chicago metropolitan area, Apna Ghar specializes in serving immigrant women who are unfamiliar with the protective options and resources available to them in the United States . While Apna Ghar was established over twenty years ago to serve South Asian women, today our clients, 80% of whom a recent immigrants, represent over 45 countries."
