Taking A Gamble

Wow. Just wow.

"Child endangerment charges have been filed against an Uptown couple accused of flying to Las Vegas and leave their two children, 12 and 9, home alone for nearly two days, police said.

The couple took the trip last month, but the charges were not filed until this week, according to police.  Shanpreta Howard, 34, and Antowain Johnson, 36, of the 4800 block of North Winthrop Avenue, are both charged with two misdemeanor counts of endangering the health and life of a child."
Read the rest of the story here.

  1. Reminds me of a similar story several years ago involving a couple in DuPage County who went on vacation, left their kids alone in the house with a bunch of TV dinners and "emergency phone numbers," and were truly surprised to be arrested upon arrival back to O'Hare. Strange...

  2. Kinda sad that leaving your 2 kids unattended for a weekend is a misdemeanor. I guess someone has to die for felony charges to be considered.

  3. I grew up in another city but there was many instances of neglect like this, also one woman had placed her newborn infant in the top drawer of her dresser and went out to "Party".
She did leave in handcuffs after this tidbit was discovered.

  4. You all shouldn't be so judgmental.

  5. Good point @yellowbeaver. If the 9 year old was hungry, he/she should have fired up the stove and made a proper meal. Worst case, maybe the 12 year old could have spotted the 9 year old some Monopoly money for a Happy Meal from the Uptown McDonald's.

But in all seriousness, you're right. People here should not be so judgmental. The parents probably had very good reasons for their trip to Las Vegas. The article doesn't after all say they were purely gambling or on vacation. They could have been attending a parenting conference or something equally important.

  6. @Alexander love the sarcasm! lol

It probably goes without saying that being left home alone is far from the worst thing that these kids will experience in their life from being raised by clueless parents. This is one incident. Imagine the mindset of these kids when they are 18. I'd be willing to bet $10,000 that this household sure isn't going to produce a scientist that will give us the cure to cancer or a future President that will end hunger, wars and poverty.

@ yellowbeaver, haha you're funny. Thank you for making me chuckle.
