Woman Dies from Hit-and-Run Accident on Sheridan

From Chicago Tribune:

"A female pedestrian described as in her 40s has died after being struck by a hit-and-run vehicle early this morning in the city's Uptown neighborhood on the North Side.

Preliminary reports said the accident happened about 1:30 a.m. on the 4700 block of North Sheridan Road near Lawrence Avenue, said Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.

The woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she later died from her injuries, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office. The spokesman did not have information available about what time the woman died or about her identity.

The Police Major Accident Investigation Unit was investigating."

Update:  The updated Trib story says the victim, Beverly Akerson, 43, of the 1200 block of North Laramie, passed away at Illinois Masonic Hospital. And the Sun-Times's version makes a very tragic story even worse: it says that the driver reversed and ran over Ms. Akerson twice. We hope the driver is found. If you have any information that can help the police, please dial 911.

  1. Why did they take her so far out of the neighborhood? What about Weiss?

  2. Maybe Illinois Masonic and Cook County Hospital were over crowded and the ambulance was diverted.

  3. Good question, ireadco. I just looked up Mt. Sinai Hospital and it's 12 miles away. Weiss is only 0.4 miles away. Maybe Weiss doesn't have a trauma center?

  4. I am thinking the same thing...There are many more trauma centers that are closer, Illinois Masonic or Northwestern come to mind. They should not all be on ER by-pass. If I was related, I would look into this.

  5. Wiess dosnt have a trauma unit, and I'm thinking Illinois Masonic was most likely on by-pass. Now I can see why the university of Chicago is getting so much flack. That's mabie why she didn't make it. But we will never know.

  6. Ireadco,

Not every hospital has a trauma unit that can handle those type of emergencies.

Here is a list of trauma units in the city of Chicago:

    Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital

    Children's Memorial Hospital Chicago
    I - Pediatric

    John H. Stroger Hospital

    Mt. Sinai Hospital Medical Center

    Northwestern Memorial Hospital
University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospitals Chicago
    I - Pediatric

Also Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn takes in many of the severe trauma victims from the south side.

My educated guess is that the victim here was taken to Mount Sinai because the other closer trauma centers were at capacity.

  7. Weiss dosnt have a trauma unit and I suppose Illinois Masonic was on possible by-pass. I understand why UOC is taking so much flack. Could be part of the reason she didn't make it. Just think about being critically injured and having to go all across the earth for medical care. But of course we will never know.

  8. I'm surprised that no one saw this. As many of you know there are many vagrants that loiter on this corner at all hours. When I let my dog out at 5AM I see a handful on that corner.

  10. @AmericaLT - Agreed! I wonder who it was.

As for the distance to the hospital, we're fortunate to have so many within 15 miles, etc. Other places need to travel FAR for hospitals!

  11. It's must be a MISTAKE if Mt Sinai was posted. I did not hear of any MULTI-Victim or Mass casualty incident yesterday. This would be the only reason why she was transported to Mt Sinai. Illinois Masonic is the "trauma center" around here. They do NOT go on bypass for traumas except for internal disasters like power loss or a mass casualty incident where other "regional trauma centers" are directed to take patients.

  12. I'm just not reading this but, around this time, right after I parked my car on Kenmore, I saw what looked like one, then another vehicle traveling westbound on Leland, and they both went through the stop sign on Kenmore/Leland. The first vehicle was definitely a car, can't remember what the other vehicle was. About a minute later, a four-door vehicle, then a TOW TRUCK, were traveling eastbound on Leland and made a right on Kenmore. The tow truck driver seemed to be chasing the foor-door, as they were both speeding down Kenmore. They then turned right onto Wilson and traveled eastbound. Obviously not sure if all were related.

  13. May I ask a serious question.. and it does not mean that a life should not be respected.. but what is a mother of three from Humboldt Park doing at 1:30am at the corner of Lawrence and Sheridan?

  14. Jon,

Wow, I'm disgusted by your comment. Parents have lives too. If her children were under care that she arranged and she chose to go out on a Saturday night then so be it. Lawrence and Sheridan are not far away from the Aragon or the Green Mill. There are also plenty of other venues and restaurants she may have been at to visit friends. Not only that but people work off shifts too. How do you know she wasn't leaving work? How do you know she wasn't on her way to work?

Your offensive suggestion that she doesn't have the right to be out without her children let alone out at that time of night is mind boggling. It's no different than telling a woman she was raped because of what she was wearing.

  15. @anditron: Wow. *I* am disgusted by you flying off the handle about Jon's very reasonable question. No one has said anything about WHY the victim was here, and it might very well have bearing on what happened. Jon didn't say that she shouldn't have been there--but his question remains. If she was out at the restaurants or music venues, was she with friends? Did they see something happen? Was she a victim of domestic violence? Did her partner force her into a vehicle and drive until she managed to escape in a distant neighborhood but s/he ran over her intentionally? Did she work in the neighborhood and get into an altercation with someone at her job? Was she looking for drugs or selling herself and her dealer or a john kill her for reasons we don't know?

The point is WE DON'T KNOW. Don't pre-judge simple logical questions unless you already have the answer, OK?

  16. Not to make light of this horrible crime, but can someone please change the headline of this article? A woman died, not a women.
