Friday, Friday...Gotta Get Rokito's On Friday

Thanks to a Facebook fan, we were given the heads up that Rokito's is opening this Friday, August 5 at 1111 W. Wilson. Doors will open bright and early at 7am, so we can assume there will be breakfast food with a spicy twist. The streetside window will be open on Fridays till 2am and on Saturdays till 3am for all your late night taco cravings.
The interior has been totally gutted and renovated and looks really funky. It warms the cockles of our hearts to see flower boxes and al fresco dining being set up on this stretch of Wilson. Be sure to support this new business and let them know we appreciate them opening in Uptown! For more info, call 773-561-5500

  1. Awesome!

The walk up windows are a great idea.

  2. They've done a real nice job on the space and I like the walkup windows as well. Really hoping the food is special, we have a lot of mediocre Mexican in Uptown but nothing special.

  3. And hopefully more eyes in this area will force the drug dealers to scurry somewhere else.

  5. A deal on midnight tacos? I pity the fool who has to work the late shift at this place, considering where it's located.

  7. Darn tootin' we'll be supporting Rokito's! It's a stunning improvement at a great location. Now if we can convince Caribou Coffee and an upscale burger place with sidewalk tables to go into the CTA property across the street (along with that French marketplace), we will be rockin!

  8. @bear60640 Alderman Cappleman just sent his retail market survey to the constituents via his e-mail blast....there might be a way to pass along that thought

  9. Just stopped in and had some coffee and the breakfast burrito. Delicious! Awesome coffee. The owner is a really nice guy, he's really passionate about his new place. The alderman was there too, showing his support. They were all talking about this post on Uptown Update and what good marketing it is. :)

  10. Can't wait to try it!

I probably won't brave that area after midnight JUST YET, but let's hope these guys run a really unique taco joint and that their courage brings them all the reward for the risk they are taking with that location.

  11. Before I get to the food, it can't be said enough what a nice job they did with this space. Nice finishes, open kitchen with large front facing windows and some vintage Uptown photos. The place feels great and really gives an impression on what can be. They went to ground zero, put in the effort and for this reason i'm pulling for them, probably more than any business in Uptown.

    The food.

It was obvious this was their first day, they were swamped and pretty overwhelmed, orders mixed up all over the place and very limited menu. All totally understanable.

By the time I got up, only steak was available (although their menu is much more interesting, including goat, carnitas, pastor). Anyways if you hate, the light gray steamed steak you get at a lot of places, no fear. This was high quality, seriously flame grilled meat with some crispy edges, very nice.

The problem was, it was totally underseasoned, a sprinkle of salt went a long way and anything resembling spice was nowhere to be found. Again it's possible they got so slammed and didn't have any pre-marinated steak on hand.

My biggest complaint was the salsa, absolutely no fire at all, it just tasted like watery tomatoes. Even a standard arbol based red and serrano/tomatillo green would have been a major upgrade. Again hopefully they're in the works.

I'll be back soon to check their progress.

  12. @Alek The owner told me to give him feedback on the food so he is open to constructive criticism. I'd mention your opinions to him. I'm sure he'd appreciate it.
