Be Alert! Attempted Break-In

A reader writes: "I just want to give everybody the heads up. My dog busted three men in white t-shirts trying to break into our property this morning. They were trying to jump our back fence on the south side of the garage at about 2am. There were two others trying to jump the fence of our neighbors across the alley. I called the police but the perps scattered. Be alert, peeps!"

This happened on the 4600 block of Magnolia, but could happen anywhere. Take precautions, don't leave anything valuable in your car, and lock your garage. If you've got a home security system, set it. If you see anyone acting suspiciously, call 911.

  1. Why do all these "urban youth" teens dress in White T-shirts and baggy pants. Is it some kind of dress code or something?

  2. Thank you for the info. Don't know how you feel about guns, but it's too bad you weren't armed.

  3. It is to make them hard to identify or tell apart.

  4. Yeah, being armed would have helped a lot. Best case you scare them away. Worst case, you find out you are a crappy shot and end up dead, or if you are a good shot, you get a manslaughter charge.

  5. I'd also like to caution anyone storing bikes outside in this area to bring them inside if possible. I used to lock my bike up to a tree on Montrose between Malden/Magnolia and someone chopped the Kryptonite lock one morning and stole it. I've been seeing more bikes parked long-term in the same area.

  6. On a similar note (Will's bike comment made me think of this)

I was walking near Marine/Lawrence late this afternoon, and I heard a woman in the park yelling "you stole my bike, and I want it back!" to a young guy she must have followed (he was riding a 'woman's' bike). People had gathered around to possibly help, and in the end it looked like he gave it back to her.

I've never seen such a confrontation like this before, and who ever she was I give her praise for courage!
