Subject Observed, Chased, Arrested; Weapon Recovered

Some good news and some good police work regarding the shooting last Thursday in the alley between JJ Peppers and Lawrence House:

On 12 May, 2011, at approximately 7:52pm in the alley at 1016 W. Lawrence, a 27-year-old man was shot by the offender (in custody), who fired multiple shots at him, one of which struck him in the buttocks.  The offender fled the scene on a bicycle and disposed of the handgun in a garbage dumpster.

One of our tactical units heard the gunshots, observed the fleeing offender, gave chase and arrested same. The handgun was also subsequently recovered.  The victim was treated for his gunshot wound at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.  The offender is a 21-year-old gang (Latin Kings) affiliated Hispanic male.  He was charged with

  • Aggravated Battery with a Firearm
  • 2 counts of UUW [Unlawful Use of a Weapon]
  • No FOID [Firearm Owners Identification Card], and
  • Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Street Gang Member
The 20th District Court Advocates will be following this case as it winds its way through the system.  It takes months and sometimes a year to go through the pretrial process.  If you have mornings free and can come to court as a court advocate (who represents the concerns of the entire community), you are most assuredly welcome and very definitely needed.  You don't have to do it every time, and appearances are usually once a month for each particular case.  If you can spare a morning once a month, please contact Ed Kuske and he can get you the necessary information.

Kudos to the Tact Team for their quick apprehension of the alleged shooter and their recovery of the weapon.

  1. I'd like to know more about the motive.

Was this a robbery gone wrong ?

Did these two know each other ?

When someone shoots someone else - the most important part of the story is Why ? Because it helps the rest of us - the citizens - understand the problem, avoid the problem and help to make sure the problem does not occur again.

    Please inform us.

  3. I agree with Josh, the more info the better regarding motive. (If possible)

@Weekend: Do we know that for sure or are we inferring because he was a Latin King? Was the victim also a gang member?

I think it's important to know for sure, because a turf war has largely different implications, especially for the CAPS team for that beat. Thanks

  4. Jeff - I think it's pretty certain from what I heard that night immediately after the shooting at the scene. But, will attend CAPS on Tues for more info.

  7. For attempted murder I think the shot has to hit the victim above the waist, but the ass was hit in the buttocks.

  8. Does anyone happen to know the specific gangs that call our dear Uptown home?

Also, does anyone watch MSNBC's The Squeeze on Saturday nights? It's about Cook County's gang/drug Central Intelligence Unit officers...it's fascinating.
