New Sights At The Buddhist Temple

The Jade Buddha has continued on its world tour, but Truc Lam Temple at Wilson and Ashland has found a new use for the backdrop and the display stand they built for its time there.  This statue (of what we imagine is Young Buddha) stands in its place.  It's nice to have a neighbor like Truc Lam with all colorful changes that the temple brings to our neighborhood.  Certainly more entertaining for drivers and pedestrians than the robin-eggs' blue Paul Revere Masonic Temple that preceded it!

  2. The Wat (Thai Buddhist Temple) on Racine next to the Riviera offers free meditation 7 days a week as well as free retreats with their Thai monks, inquire within! Its a wonderful place here in Uptown that is way below the radar.

  3. Truc Lam has a scale-model of the property depicting their long range goals for the temple.
Its fascinating, there will be big changes to come, as funds are raised I assume. They've wheeled it outside for festivals over the summer so look for it.

For decades that property sat virtually unused, my brother lived across the street for years and only saw someone mow the grass now and again.

    But what a change...awesome!

Yes, the "temple" (storefront)next to the Golden Pancake House. I know, looks pretty dead but its VERY much alive. Sunday services are at 10 am. Given mostly in Thai, but stick around for the HUGE pot luck all provided by the community, much of which owns restaurants in the area, its SOOOO good. Meditation is 6 days a week at 5 pm but its in the house behind the temple. Ask or poke around, you'll find it...

  6. Uptown Action.. maybe that temple could be a little more "neighborly" and spruce up their space? The temple is part of a larger fabric of the community... would be nice to see cool things in the window that exemplifies what makes the temple and their people special... just an idea..

  8. The "temple" next to Pancake House, and the 2 single family homes on Magnolia behind it are in terrible shape (not related to the Buddists on Ashland).

I welcome these groups to the neighborhood, but how about a little upkeep on their places of residence (again, not referring to the group on Ashland)? I've often wondered if they are just letting the houses on Magnolia deteriorate to the point where they have to be torn down, just so they can build another cinderblock temple. A little paint and upkeep go a long way. And it wouldn't cost much - especially since I don't believe property taxes are an issue...

  9. I think this statue may be related to the upcoming "Buddha's Birthday" celebration that always features some very imaginative decorations; maybe they're trying to do their version of the "December Holiday" festivities?

  10. Guapo,

I am not affiliated with the temple in any way. I suggest being neighborly and taking your suggestions/ideas up with them, no?
