Seven Years Bad Luck

What's going on with the drivers around here lately?  A reader writes about another incident where the parked cars took the brunt of the damage, late last night:

"Just went outside to investigate what sounded like multiple car crashes at 11:15 between on Malden between Leland and Lawrence.   A car driving northbound on Malden hit over 10 cars.  According to a witness outside, driver was trying to shake a man who was hanging out the passenger window.   Just wanted to share this as many car owners parked on the East-side of the street are going to find missing side-mirrors, side-swiped doors and bumpers hanging off their cars.  The police showed up within minutes of phoning it in.  Please share so that the car owners are aware what happened."

We went by last night and saw a lot of dangling and missing driver-side mirrors.  Sorry for the owners, who will face the hassle of filing claims and getting repairs.

  1. Im sure this is not helping with car insurance rates for uptown.

Today as a sidenote I will mention that I finally got winthrop inbetween lawrence and leland decently cleaned up. Today it took about 3 small bag fulls of empty bottles and cans and junk that about half filled up the trash can at lawrence and winthrop.

Just so that the people who live around there dont think some miracle happened. It was me a nut who doesnt even live in the area who happens to be there once a week who decided to keep cleaning it up.

Thats my trash report for the week.

  2. Jeffo, kudos to you. That gathering place right by the downed tree limb is always a pint-sized problem for everyone who lives there. And a nice gathering place for the 6-8 am drunks. Thanks for caring. Count me officially inspired, for one.

  4. This is horrible. On a side note, I've gotten many erroneous parking tickets in Uptown lately AND harrassed and pulled over by the cops accusing me of driving talking on my cell... and they had the wrong car! Nice of them to harrass a pregnant woman with a toddler in the back seat. I'm fed up!

  5. Jeffo - I live and work in that area, too, and I REALLY appreciate what you did! I took the advice from a previous comment posted on this blog and have picked up an extra bottle or two on Winthrop when I have gone out, but a more comprehensive effort seemed too daunting. In any case, THANK YOU!

  6. It is daunting and intimidating to pickup trash. But the neredowells who dont like it arent going to say anything. They will just think you are weird. They probably are shocked that someone can very quickly pickup most of the trash in very little time. All their hardwork gone to waste! Also they probably are embarrased. Someone noticed their trash and cares....

Im glad that you guys are pitching in, the more people help the easier it is to keep clean and safe. I also noticed yesterday some tagging on the Chase sign by the parking lot and some tagging on the corner of the Chase building by the parking lot. Chase has been better at keeping their sidewalk clean I talked to them about it a few months ago.

Anyways I really like that stretch of Winthrop and I want it to do well. Its similar to where I live in Rogers Park because I live on a similar stretch of road (wayne) just around the corner from the EL and its had its fair share of litterbugs...

  7. Well, thanks, but I never pick up any trash after being pricked by a used hypodermic needle in a stryofoam cup then having to take numerous time off of work to go back and forth to the hospital dozens of times to ensure I hadn't contracted hepatitis B or C. Not fun.

  8. I like how Turkeeee has to throw a comment in about police harrasment. No one likes getting stopped by the police, but isn't police presence in Uptown a good thing??? Also, thanks to Jeffo on cleaning up the area.

  9. Trishinuptown. Then use nifty nabbers. You can pickup stuff without ever touching it. Thats what I do.
