Copper Thieves Return
Looks like an old problem has resurfaced:
"I live on the 4800 Block of Winthrop in a new construction condo building and on Tuesday morning some vandals came into our gated property. They brought tools with them and took apart 2 air-conditioning units and stole all the copper tubing from the units. They also pulled all the wires as well. I am not sure if this has happened to anyone else in the neighborhood but I was hoping you could post it to alert others."

ReplyDeleteGoes to show that people can't just close themselves off from reality and live in a bubble. Get to know your neighbors. Talk to people who live across the alley from you. Community isn't something that "just happens."
QRBNST -- most people with front yards have fences and gates to prevent dogs from using their front yards as bathrooms.
ReplyDeleteCHA-owned properties all have fences and gates, for example.
Your claim that these crime victims are "cutting themselves off from reality" sounds classist unless you always make similar accusations that people who live in CHA housing are also living in a bubble.
How about, You poor neighbors, that's horrible, it's gonna be a hassle and expensive to replace, and I'm really sorry it happened to you. Is there anything we can do to help? instead?
THAT's building community. Try it sometime instead of blaming the victim.

ReplyDeleteI was simply saying that being proactive is better than being reactive.
I was raised in a blue collar neighborhood where people talked to their neighbors and got to know them.
If the only time people reach out is when something happens then results can be haphazard and very incidental.
People are more likely to keep an eye on their neighbors' yards when they are in regular contact with their neighbors.
People are also less likely to let their dogs take a dump or a leak on their neighbors yard when they know they'll be talking to seeing and talking to them sometime.
And they ARE reaching out. They're new residents and they're letting people know this is happening, via the blog.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't sound to me like they're living in a bubble. Sounds to me like they're creating community.
