Same Snow, Different Day
The Tribune has captioned this photo from 1979 as "the corner of Lawrence and Clark." But the two gas stations make us think it's Lawrence and Ashland, instead. Any sleuths care to chime in? The original photo is here, and you can click to enlarge the one to the left.
I believe you are correct that it's Lawrence and Ashland, looking west from east of Ashland. The faint building in the distance is Sears.
ReplyDeleteCorrect ... the photographer may be at Lawrence/Clark but the Shell and former Standard Oil gas stations are on Lawrence/Ashland.
ReplyDeleteIf you panned to the right you would see Crafty Beaver Lumber and down Clark St, the Rainbo Roller rink, which was razed and replaced with the partially sold Rainbo Village Condo Complex.
At one time, I lived on Ashland, just south of Lawrence. The photo does show Ashland and Lawrence facing west, but the photographer was probably standing one short block east, on Clark. At Lawrence Avenue, Ashland and Clark are just one block apart.
ReplyDeleteIt's Lawrence and Ashland. You can see the detail on the building at the SW corner of that intersection. Great photo!
