Police Charge Man in Tuesday's Murder

Uptown resident Brayant Rogers was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and possession of cannabis today in the killing of Brian Green and the wounding of another man on Tuesday. Read about it here.

Good work, police officers, in being on the scene of the crime so quickly and for making such a fast arrest.

Update: According to Fox Chicago, a police officer in an unmarked car witnessed the murder take place. Bad timing for the bad guys. Make that the alleged bad guys.

Brayant lives at 4425 N Malden, which has been quite the hotspot in the last couple years, involving drive-by shootings and the involvement of Rep. Harris. Check it out here.

We're sure Ald. Shiller will be quite involved in this murder investigation, seeing as she has such a personal connection to the site.

Update 2: A second Breaking News article has some additional information, including the fact that the murder was witnessed by an undercover police officer who was there to document drug sales, and that Brayant Rogers has a previous conviction for attempted murder.

Our reactions:
  1. WTF?
  2. Busy life for someone just 27 years old.
  3. When there are so many law-abiding people who desperately need a place to live, why is valuable subsidized housing be given to those convicted of attempted murder? Where's the One Strike Law? How is this fair to the people who live next door to felons in subsidized housing, who don't have the option to move? How is it fair to any neighbors, period?

  1. Thanks again CPD. Now we can only hope the court system does their job.

  2. These criminals in Uptown are horrifically stupid....

I am not shocked at all that police might have witnessed this crime. They know where the hotspots are; it is just a matter of time before they would see something like this go down right before their eyes. Heck, I witness drug deals all the time, and have seen my share of scuffles.

Further, its not like Uptown is that big or filled with hopeless citizens that are just going to sit down and take it. I would hope we would use our eyes and ears and have the will to take action if we were unfortunate enough to witness this kind of utter crap.

Perhaps a leader with some balls to say enough is enough will rally the people to coordinate our efforts and push this crap out of our community once and for all. I am not at all afraid to say that I would like to see gangs and criminals pushed out of Uptown.

    What a bunch of losers...

  3. Goes to show you how much respect they have for the police camera hanging right across the street. Also, maybe (I doubt) the remaining business will take the time to start calling the police. The property owners at this corner seem to be more concerned with towing Starbucks customers cars, than renting out space. FYI...that silver Taurus in the parking lot...he is waiting there to have your car towed immediately.

I can't wait for his friends and family to get on Uptown Update and start defending him IN ALL CAPS.

  4. He has a previous conviction for attempted murder. How the FFF was he eligible to live in the subsidized housing?

  6. A few minutes ago (4pm) I heard 4-5 gunshots coming from the area around Magnolia and Sunnyside. I was a block away and called 911 immediately.

YOU OR I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT GUY DID TO GET WHAT HE GOT. I'M A HONEST BELIEVER IN KARMA... YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT OUT!!!!!! SO STOP BELIEVING EVERY THING YOU HEAR OR READ...AND WHILE EVERY ONE IS JUDGING HIM.. TAKE THE TIME TO understand yourself better... But I wonder who you people are going to put your blame on now that YOUR TOPIC OF CONVERSATION IS ALREADY IN JAIL.

  9. I hope the CPD that were there when it happened get the collar. They deserve the credit. Way to go guys/gals!

The gangbangers are really stupid, but they probably don't care given their ignorance/lack of education. Again, it boils down to (sadly) young folks killing young folks over pointless issues.

There are a million places to point fingers, but things won't change unless EVERYONE takes action. OK, everyone but certain politicians and ignorant residents...:)

  10. Just as predicted, here come the gangbanger defenders TYPING IN ALL CAPS.

Non-Judgemental, you're out of your mind if you think that murdering people on city streets -- executing them, really -- is okay.

I don't mind being judgmental about, oh, street assassinations. Or someone being shot in the back while his wife and baby are in the same car. Or a young mother being shot while waiting for a bus. Or an immigrant student being shot in the head because of a case of mistaken identity.

You want to be non-judgmental... move somewhere that has no laws and all justice is carried out vigilante-style. But here, in the civilized world, that's not how things work.

Sorry that your great understanding of the very sad problems of Brayant Rogers don't extend to your neighbors, who are rightly and justifiably upset and horrified at five street murders in less than a year.

  11. With our State Legislature`s ruling Democrats passing a bill to ban the death penalty, families and victims that have suffered from ones like this one, will never see justice served. Living the rest of their life with 3square meals, AC and TV makes murder pretty attractive to me if done in this state.

One fact is that a Cop watched this "shithead" (Brayant Rodgers) fire a weapon into a van, killing one and wounding another. Another fact that we understand is that no legal justification existed for said act. Go find a gangbangers blog and post comments there !

  13. This has been a problem spot for a "few" years? Try 25 or more.

I've lived here over 20 years and this same corner (of CHA scattered site housing townhome and federally subsidized project section 8 buildings) has been housing gangs that entire time.

What changed over the past 10 years is the introduction of a new gang into the neighborhood. The area north of Montrose used to belong to the Gangster Disciples and the area south of Montrose (particularly Kenmore) belonged to the Latin Kings. At that time shoot outs were common along Broadway and Hazel was the alternative route that the Kings travleded along to avoid passing the GD's. Over time, the Kings had fewer properties available to them in their area and their influence diminished.

Everthing changed when the Chicago Housing Authority decided to tear down Cabrini Green and give those tenants priority on the CHA and subsidized Section 8 waiting lists. Under that program, Cabrini Green's Black P' Stones were moved into the Magnolia CHA townhomes and this escalating shooting war between the GD's and P-stones began and when Wilson / Magnolia became the new war zone.

Why were known gang members moved into CHA townhomes instead of being evicted? That is a good question to ask Ald. Helen Shiller and former Chicago Dept of Human Relations head turned Hull House director, Clarence Woods - his organization has the contract to manage these properties in Uptown.)

While there were laws then, and still are regulations now that should screen gang members and drug dealers out of these properties, they are never enforced in this area.

How do I know all this? Because as a CAPS beat faciliator, I spent years going to Old Orchard and downtown to pull criminal histories from the court records and demanding that these persons, who do not qualify, be removed from this housing. It was not done, even when the townhouse at Magnolia and Leland was "rented" to unqualified single males instead of qualified families and operated as the Gangster Disciples headquarters.

When tenants were moved from Cabrini Green to Uptown they were supposed to be screened. They were not. Why not? Because the alderman and those in charge of the program in Uptown did not, and do not want those rules enforced. To hell with community safety. To hell with federal, state, and city ordinances and regulations. THEY BELIEVE, THEY ADMINISTER in such a way as to allow dangerous criminals to thrive there. After all, THEY SAY, criminals need to live somewhere (on the taxpayer dime) and where will they go?

And does the Mayor, Police HQ, and Dept of Housing know this is going on? Sure, we've told them. But remember, what is bad for Uptown is good for the rest of the city. Why the hell should they step in to stop such a symbiotic practice that cleans up other wards while concentrating it in a few communities? They just turn a blind eye and (falsely) claim ignorance.

So, Uptowners, take the bullets and lose your kids. It's good for the criminals and the rest of the city.
