Siam Cafe just north of Leland on Sheridan.. NOT be be confused with Siam Noodle and Rice which is just SOUTH of Leland on Sheridan...and frankly better food =)
this was driving me nuts for some reason, so i had to look around until i got an answer. the sidewalk says "Feltman & Curme" and it was a national shoe store chain. they also had a location at 118 s state street.
Bootsie, you rock! Thanks for coming up with the answer. Apparently F&C was started in the early 1920s and lasted until at least 1950. There were ten stores in Chicago at its height of business. Here's an ad for their shoes that I found online.
I am pretty sure this is in front of Siam Cafe but not sure what it used to be.

ReplyDeleteRob and Plate712, you are correct! We love little hints of Uptown's past like this.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what the previous tiles refer to?
I can make out two words: "[alder]man" and "curmudgeon".

ReplyDeletefrom the handful of images i could find of their stores, it seems they had a thing for permanently inscribing their name in/on sidewalks.
