Things That Go Bump In The Night

We're getting lots of reports and questions about one or two very loud bangs / explosions in the Clarendon Park area last night, but no one seems to know what they were or report any damage.  Anyone?

"Did Uptown Update or any readers hear the loud explosion around 4:15 this morning?  I live on Agatite between Hazel and Clarendon and was awoken around 4:15 by a huge explosion.  My neighbor said he saw a flash of light as well, although I didn’t.  No sirens afterward to investigate and strangely, only one car alarm was set off even though the noise was massive sounding.  Also, no signs of damage or problems anywhere when I left the house at 7:00.  I’m baffled – was it a random thunderclap/ lightning, meteor, gang thing?"

  1. Me and my wife was up about that time and also heard the loud bang. We live on the 20th floor at Montrose and Clarendon and can see West and North but we did not see anything out of the ordinary. Sounded to me like some type of a large fireworks going off.

  2. I think everyone on Agatite woke up to that, it was loud. Everyone in my building woke up and I figured to see something huge this morning but there was nothing. A mystery!

  3. Very loud can't be THAT lound. Didn't hear anything from Hazel & Montrose, and 4:15am is the middle of my day. I was sitting right here at my computer, next to my open window...

  4. I live on sunnyside between claredon and hazel and heard the very very loud sound. I thought it was an explosion. There were two car alarms, one on agitate and one on sunnyside, that went off afterwards. I believe there was some sort of official in the alley between the sunnyside and agitate as I heard a large vehicle (I didn't get up to see if it was a fire truck or some sort of service vehicle) and all my neighbors were talking to whomever was out there. Again, I didn't get up and didn't see anything unusual once I woke up at 6:30. Would love to know what it was.

  5. We live at Montrose and Dayton. We were startled awake by the loud sound around 4:15. The car alarms were in our parking lot. Other than being really annoying, I don't think the instances were related.

  7. i also heard the explosion. i live at 8__ w agatite and it sounded as if it were coming from the west side of our building. i heard a male voice, could not locate the source or understand the actual words. there was also a metal impact sound along with the explosion, did not hear any police sirens- was very tired and went back to sleep- we have had a lot of suspicious activity around our building and a gang style tag on the sidewalk in front of our building- very disturbing. our block definitely needs a consult with the gang crimes task force. the activity is getting worse- these may be the street soldiers- there is bigger stuff up the chain.....

  8. We live on Agatite between Hazel and Clarendon and early this morning, Thursday, about 1:45am, we heard the loud explosion sound that we heard 2 mornings ago. We called 911 to alert the police and hopefully get some patrol, but that's about all we can do at this point, I guess. Any word on what this is?? It's very disturbing and quite unsettling that there is no information about what is going on and where this is coming from.

  9. I heard the noise again last night at almost 2:00 as well then again at 4:00am. I did not hear it the previous nights but it woke me up both times last night. It doesn't sound like gunfire, there's a much larger echo than with gunfire. If I had to guess I think someone is 'blowing up' garbage cans in the alley. My bedroom window is on the alley just off Hazel between Agatite and Sunnyside and whatever happened was going on right there. I didn't see anyone or hear anyone at all. Anyone else???
