Breakfast Time!

A reader sends in the following pic and info:
"I thought your readers would be interested in the deal that "Cousins" restaurant on Leland just east of Clark is advertising. The sign is self-explanatory. I've been here several times now and hope it becomes a neighborhood staple. The food is great and the prices can't be beat. I will be glad when the streetscape work is done on Clark and I'm sure the businesses will be as well."

  1. I've been there for dinner and can concur that the place is great! Soup with every sandwich/entree? Awesome! Great service too.

  2. The food is good, the restaurant clean, service attentive but I fear that location is killing business. You would not know its there driving up and down Clark. The location killed FaMe de Lupo, It cant be much easier for Cousins. Good luck to the owners.

  3. Too bad that sign is ILLEGAL ! That sign could be subject to a $240 fine from the city. I have had 3 of these violations in the past year after having none in the prior 30 years , and all were $240 fines. When I contacted the city , I was told these signs are illegal because they are "dangerous" and they are cracking down all over the city.

  4. I know this is not what you want to here, but I think you can get a permit to have the sign on the street like that. It is cheaper than the tickets.

    Just trying to help...

  5. They have had different locations over the years if I recall. The location sort of is a minus BUT if the food is good ...

  6. All signs placed on a public way are illegal and in violation, There is no permit available for them . Go to the hearing offices at 400 W Superior and watch all the small business owners paying hundreds of dollars in fines for this and other petty , nitpicking violations. Then go to a misdemeanor court like Belmont and Western and watch almost every case be dismissed.

  7. BWGYM - So all of the signs outside of Chicago bars/restaurants/parking lots stating their drink/food/parking specials are illegal and not permit-able? (yeah, made that word up)

That's a hard one to swallow.

I have been at hearing office on 3 seperate occasions and have seen plenty of people fined for the signs you see everywhere.I do believe there is selective enforcement as to certain wards , but anyone with a sign like that is risking a $240 fine.Local street and san guy who is a friend said this used to be enforced by the ward office, but downtown is now sending out inspectors who write the tickets.Another interesting one I have seen on several occasions is $500 fines for not having proper reflective tape on business dumpsters in alleys.Throw all this stuff in with the parking meter situation , and it is no wonder that so many businesses are closing or leaving. As someone who works in the criminal justice area , what I find amazing is the city wants to squeeze every penny from taxpayers and business, while the States Attorneys office doesn't want to prosecute 90% of the arrests .
