So How's Your Fourth?

It's 7:30 and so far so good, it seems.  Lots of police officers on the streets, and lots of traffic control officers, as well, in our neck of the woods.  Uptown Update's email box and Facebook page are quiet.  So what's going on where you are?

Update:  A reader writes in at 8:05 -- "Quiet at Lawrence/Sheridan area. The city seems well staffed. After reading articles in the Trib, I wish they were running shuttle buses like during Cubs games. I feel bad for the elderly and other folks who have trouble walking more than 1-2 blocks. You would think that closing off the main arteries (Lawrence/ Wilson/ Montrose) and running free shuttle buses would be a good idea. They were telling folks to take the CTA and that would only encourage more people to take public transit, rather than drive. I hope Uptown businesses are getting an uptick from all of the folks passing through."

  2. I was able to enjoy the fireworks from the water walk down by the clock tower. Everything was well controlled and it was nice to be able to spread everyone out along the water.

  3. I will say that by us at least there were a bunch of people setting off their own fireworks right down on the walk at the water. It was annoying only b/c they were doing it DURING the show. Maybe it's just me, but it seemed like weird timing...why not just do it before or after the fireworks are done. Maybe they were looking for attention?

  4. It needs to be moved back to Navy Pier . I drove in from the burbs to try and make it back but got stuck and then it took me like 20 minutes to get to my parking space that I pay taxes to have. This is all because of the darn rent-a-cops (TCM) that even with my ID would not allow me onto Clarendon or Lawrence to access my alley. Why are they not enforcing the fireworks regulations -- the show ended at 9:15 and until 10:15 at least in fron t of the cops, and TCM, they were setting them off. I finally fgot to my parking space by my condo about 10:20 after driving around for nearly and hour...WTF!

  5. I think it needs to move back to Grant Park also.
But I've learned to 'duck and cover' taking the garbage out in my condo alley at Malden/Magnolia.
Some serious baby-bombs going off as we speak. But it's nice to hear the neighbors laughing and having fun.

  7. I don't understand the desire to move the fireworks back to Grant Park? Don't we want people to come to Uptown?

I watched the fireworks from Cricket Hill last night, and it was awesome. My neighbors and I were making comments like "This is the way Uptown should and could be"

  8. Agree with Windy City....I know the trash sucks (hopefully the city will get most of it), traffic sucked (plan ahead people)....but we live in a CITY, GET OVER IT.

And yes, this is what Uptown should and could be....less one Helen Shiller.

  9. OK. I'm over it. You're right. This is good for Uptown. As a matter of fact, there needs to be more things in Uptown to bring people in to the neighborhoods.

  10. I spent the 4th in Hyde Park watching The Other Fireworks. @4:30 I rode from Montrose/Sheridan to The point (57th st), and have never seen quite so many happy people all along the lakefront. It's good to hear that despite the crazy traffic, there was space to spread out at Montrose. I thought it might be packed from the look of the crowds piling in.

  11. Billions of dollars in debt, but people want the city to pay for free bus rides to see explosives. Interesting.
