Update: The shooter has been caught!

We've gotten 2 reports of a shooting this afternoon involving a man being shot in the back near Arnold's Diner at Broadway and Irving. Please add any updates in the comments.

Update: A reader on the scene writes: "I spoke to employees of local businesses at Broadway and Irving Park. The shooting happened approximately two hours ago in front of the Dunkin Donuts and the Taco del Mar Mexican restaurant (Although the person behind the counter at Dunkin Donuts denied it).

People reported that an Hispanic man shot an African American man in the stomach (not the back). A local employee in the area told me "There were two shots and people started running all over the place." By the time I arrived, everything was neat and clean.

Someone on the opposite corner of the shooting must have gotten seriously shaken because they dropped their groceries on the ground (see photo)."

Update 2: According to James Cappleman on Facebook, the news from the 2313 CAPS meeting tonight is that the shooting was gang related and the police have three "persons of interest" in custody. Nice job, coppers. Scary to see the gang violence spreading into new areas.

  1. I bet the UU has to really search to find a new gun that they haven't already shown readers.

This is not the Aldermans fault I know....just her extremely poor urban planning model that benefits herself.

  2. Generally when there is violence near that location the "Cuyler Boys" are involved. That's a hispanic street gang whose members conveniently largely live on the stretch of Cuyler between Broadway and Clarendon.

  3. wow..looks like the violence is spreading..cannot even go get the great breakfast special at Arnolds without getting shot.

  4. i guess there are benefits to having your air conditioner on full blast. you can't hear the gunshots anymore! problem solved.

i'm not really shocked at the shootings anymore. that's what happens i guess. at first you're freaked out - then you get numb to it until it happens right in front of your face.

  5. Helen Shiller, you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

    See you next (election) Tuesday.

  6. i'm sure they were just using one of these: http://blogs.westword.com/latestword/nerf%20gun.jpg

UU can use it as a new picture whenever there is a bout of "fisticuffs" in the neighborhood.

this summer, i am taking a shot everytime there is gunfire reported. two shots if I hear them personally. The saddest drinking game ever...IrishPirate, you in?

  7. This is exactly why we need (insert name of your favorite candidate here) as the next aldercritter of the 46th Ward.

There seems to be some war going on between hispanic gangs and some black gangs in Uptown. That has also occurred in the past, but has been relatively infrequent in more recent years.

Anyway I'm glad the po po picked up some suspects.

  8. Andy G,

this whole idea that I drink alot is a complete myth.

I only drink on days that end in a "y".

As for drinking games I'm a bit old for that.

  9. Oh. Crap!

It just now dawned on me ... if shootings start to occur SOUTH of Irving (y'know .. the area where our beloved alderman trolls for her "campaign" money), crime may actually become her issue.

Those folks won't stand for gang violence creeping into their neck of the woods (like many of us have been predicting for some time).

And, they sure as hell won't tolerate any lame-ass dismissals.

  10. I like the gun pictures UU always puts on. Look like the one I just bought and hope to register soon. There is very little gang activity in that area but on Cuyler street toward Broadway in some section 8 apartments I have seen a group of punks out in front flashing signs at passing cars. Like noted by the Pirate, Cuyler Boys.

  11. gang injuctions
    worked in LA
    in venice and west LA

Chicago, maybe evicting the family that the gangmember lives with
will help, they are part of the problem.

    Evict them.

  12. Unfortunately, geofredo, when the CHA tries to evict people with felonies, Shiller's "Uptown Peoples Law Center" fights it in court, costing the CHA thousands of dollars and delaying the eviction, sometimes for years. All on the taxpayer's dime, of course.

  13. Of course the crime is shocking.
I guess I'm more shocked that this happened 'south of Montrose'

I swear, most of Uptown's trauma seems to be centered just steps from the 46th Ward Office.
Which of course is puzzling, to say the least.

Sad to say, the most peaceful and 'safe' part of Uptown is Graceland Cemetery.

  14. Was anyone at Molly's kick off and if so did she have anything to say about this. I know we heard from James, I'd love to hear from the other candidates

  15. @yo - thought the same exact thing when reading about the incident this evening.

Let's see how quickly they get answers.

  16. FYI

I heard a ton of sirens yesterday (Weds) screaming towards LSD and Montrose around 6:00 p.m. There also seemed to be a low flying helicopter going in the same direction. I thought maybe there was an accident on LSD.

While running about 20 minutes later I saw a familiar looking black 2010 Cadillac Escalade with big rims surrounded by about 10 CPD cars at the Fullerton exit. The vehicle was off the road in the grass as if it was a chase that came to an abrubt stop - maybe due to the usual heavy traffic on the exit. They had two or three very sweaty white t-shirt wearing dirtbags in custody and were removing everything from the vehicle.

It makes me wonder if this is the same vehicle involved in the Uptown shootout a few weeks ago. Perhaps the police tried to stop them in Uptown and they fled south on LSD. I have seen the same model Escalade spewing marijuana smoke and terrible music around Uptown all summer. I hope it was the same vehicle and it is now sitting in a CPD impound - perhaps as evidence in an attempt murder case.

  17. Chicago is nothing short of a war zone.

  18. I bet folks there all the way down to Addison would be very surprised to know that this is in Shillers Ward.. My guess is most think they are in Tunneys.... will be interesting to see if the candidates can educate that entire corridor of the truth... and use this as flyer material taht they are part of the 46th Ward.. and this is what happens when you elect those that really just dont care about the average Joe

  19. (assuming the shooter and the victim were both in gangs) Finally! A gang shooter that was accurate enough to only hit his intended victim! No innocent bystanders hit.

And they captured the driver after a brief foot chase. They exited the Drive at Fullerton and thats where the Police caught up with them. The Police were very patient and waited for them to exit instead of running a very dangerous high speed chase on LSD.
The gangbangers likely would have wounded or killed an innocent driver while fleeing, had the Police pursued them in that fashion. The shooting at Irving and B-Way was gang related.

  21. I witness the entire event in my car in front of the shooter. My child is at the lycee francais and I have never seen violence there. Its such a shame.. The shooter shot 2x and the man shot could barely walk . Traffic was halted under the green light as the man being shot was already limping and walking slow so no one could move. Then out of nowhere the boy pulls out his gun and fires 2 shots. He started running on foot north on broadway with a friend in front of him. The victim shot went south on broadway.. What a shame! I called 911 and then police started coming. We were afraid the shooter was going to shoot at random..

  22. Every now and then there is some gunfire on that 800 block of Cuyler mentioned above, but it's been quiet for a couple of years now (as far as I know). And of course, the block with the Hotel Chateau and Gill Park Coop is just plain trouble. There was a murder at the BP on Broadway and Irving Park Road a few years ago, but that was at 3 a.m. This shooting, in broad daylight, is by far the scariest incident for me in the five years I've lived in Buena Park. I walked my daughters through that area just an hour or two before this shooting. Let's hope that we go several more years without another incident in this area.

  23. I remember a murder happening at the BP at that intersection a few years ago, but that was at 3:00 in the morning. The 800 block of Cuyler has it's sporadic gunfire problems from time to time, but has been quieter in recent years. In my more than five years of living in Buena Park, this shooting incident yesterday has shaken me more than any other. I had just been at that Dunkin Donuts with my daughters an hour or so before this shooting. The shooting outside of Michael's Pizza earlier in the summer has made this our most challenging summer for crime. Before these incidents, it had been quite peaceful around here for several years.

Any word on why they were pulled over to begin with?

    Is it related to Uptown?

Did the police begin following them in Uptown?

  25. I don't think the bldgs on Cuyler are section 8, however they are very low rentals. The majority are Hispanics. It has been quite for some time and now the new generation Cuyler Boys are starting to grow some ba***. I am fat up with all this. I grew up in Lakeview and now have been in Uptown for 8yrs.. It can be much better.. Im new to this great UU site.

  26. UptownR - Please don't paint an entire block (Broadway between Grace and Sheridan) with your broad brush because of the Chateau situation. There are some good "respectable" businesses on that stretch including Starbucks, Strawdog Theatre and other groups, Hearty Boys Catering and a really nice Internet cafe/business center that I, for one, found very helpful and convenient when I had to do some after-hours paperwork and didn't feel like heading to my office.

I would imagine that the proprietors of these businesses are doing the best they can to "clean up" their block and sweeping generalizations about "trouble" don't help.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Local Lassie, I imagine people getting shot in the back doesn't help the situation much either.

In fact, I bet people getting shot in the back is a bigger problem than "sweeping generalizations."

  28. FYI. the 800 Block of Cuyler has turned over the majority of it's sketchy residents over the past 3 years. 826 Cuyler was completed overhauled and new residents are moving in (not sure about the ad for "Luxury Apartments" but it is a step forward). There are still 2 buildings on that block with lower income families but the only problems usually had with them are firecrackers late at night and ear piercing Ranchero music out the windows.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I suspect the sketchy "resident" of the 4500 block of Broadway will be turned out soon.

Oh, Helen. What shall I do when you are nothing, but a distant memory that reminds me of something smelly on the bottom of my shoes.

  30. I was at Arnolds. I ordered my food, went out to get a paper, when I bent over to grab it, I heard Pop pop. I ducked, saw the guys across the street (the targets) scatter & run.The shooter was behind me in the Arnolds doorway, shooting south. The idiot shooter lived 1/2 block away @ 4000 or so Bdwy. By the time I finished my lunch, the police had him.

  31. My friend was eating at Taco Del Mar when this all went down. He said that the person who was shot staggered into to the taco place holding his stomach saying that he had been shot. He said that he sat him down, gave him some water and called the police. The police showed in in about three minutes from his call. The ambulance took about ten minutes.
