Nowotny in.. Shiller, with her full retirement benefits now in place, out.. but backing Nowotny and keeping her retinue of hacks in place... just as many of us had suspected... at least that is MY opinion by reading this article...
I didn't realize that the 2nd big loan Nowotny got came from "Not So Sharpe's" wife. Interesting.
Another nail in the political coffin of Shiller not running. I do have a little pry bar available if she decides to run and bring joy to my heart. I can use it to remove those nails and then after she loses next year I can use a hammer to put them right back.
I'll be back to comment on other parts of the LEN article after I down another Guinness.
Maybe it's just me but I wasn't keen on the quote:
"I didn’t get the benefit of being promoted on [neighborhood blog] Uptown Update,” Phelan said. “On the other hand, I wasn’t actively seeking donations from the community but it doesn’t mean that I’m not going to.”"
I think this blog has been pretty good about getting her candidacy out there so I guess I don't get her point? Were we really "promoting" Cappleman? Maybe in the comments section from certain users, but not really in the posts. Let me know if I'm missing something
if that happens itz about da only reasonable shot Nowatny has to win in February or an April runoff. At least I think so.
He could immediately "run away" from Shiller and try to portray himself as "new". He has already come out against more "low income" housing which was the smart political move.
So much of the political energy of this ward is "anti-Shiller" that to preemptively remove Shiller would be a brilliant move.
I don't expect it to happen because such brilliance is a rare thang.
Plus as Alderman Nowatny would actually be able to raise some serious cash without even working for it.
I'd still bet on Cappleman to be elected, but it would be a more interesting race.
I wonder why she waited to the last minute to seek money when she knew a long time ago she was running? Didn't she know this reporting period was important?
I don't think Molly was saying UU chose not to promote her fundraising efforts. I think she was talking about from a timing perspective, since she didn't announce her cadidacy until after UU published its post about donating. I am certain Molly would agree that UU has done a good job of keeping us up to date on all the challengers activities, including hers.
Molly's statement was a bit silly. Perhaps she had an off moment.
She clearly has been considering running since at least January, when her logo was designed, so it strikes me as "whining".
If she had declared earlier Uptown Update would have run the information. If she wanted to raise money locally she should have worked for it.
Cappleman has been working for four years to get elected and whoever gets elected next year needs to work for it. Whether that winner is Cappleman, Phelan, Carroll or Zeus forbid Nowatny.
Now perhaps I missed it, but did Cappleman have a booth at Ribfest? Phelan did.
Good, that shows she's working for it. Unfortunately, one commenter, CLC, here said:
"I saw Cappleman and Phelan working the beer tent, too. I also saw that Phelan started helping out only AFTER seeing Cappleman there. I learned a lot from this."
Whether true or not it's a devastating comment and observation.
To Be Continued as apparently I've run my fingers too long typing.
Uptown Update was indirectly responsible for a great deal of the publicity and money Fix Wilson Yard was able to garner.
Molly should have announced earlier and held some fundraisers instead of being "Molly Come Lately".
Looking at the D-2's it's clear that as of this moment Cappleman has broader support in the ward. That may change, but unless the challengers step up their games it ain't gonna happen.
Defeating Cappleman is going to take a whole lotta hard work. The man is like the Energizer bunny. He goes to nearly every meeting and event in da hood. He's made connections with people and groups from throughout the ward and has good name recognition among likely voters and people who can motivate others to vote.
If I announced I was opening an envelope in front of my place on this blog I have little doubt Cappleman would show up with a letter opener. Perhaps he would just toss the letter opener out of his convertible as he drove to another gathering.
Dat's how hard he's been working.
Now personally I'm supporting Jimbo, but I want real challengers because if he wins it will make him a better alderman.
If someone can defeat him and work harder and smarter then do it.
Don't whine. Do.
Cappleman ran a good campaign last time and lost. He dusted himself off, got up and went back to work. There's not much "whining" in that picture.
It's early yet, but so far Cappleman is the only one who is working hard and playing smart.
Nowatny's loans don't impress me.
Carroll's fundraising was surprisingly anemic. Which makes me question his viability as a candidate.
Phelan raised a good amount of money, but relatively little came from Ward residents. With Fix Wilson Yard she showed an ability to work hard and smart.
She needs to rekindle that ability quickly. That means no more stupid moves like being the "ward coordinator" for Terry O'Brien's County campaign.
That means getting out there and working. I don't know if she can win, but she clearly knows how to work for it. Time will tell if she does.
I hope she runs a great campaign. No matter if she wins or not the Ward will be better for it.
do be do be do...I haven't heard such apathy since Alex uttered that jingle, and ahh...it's good to know that there are others that are just as disillusioned with the true picture of things. Keep up the healthy cynicism, it's better to laugh than to cry.
IP - Carroll had a booth at Rib Fest, all day Sat and Sun. You must have missed him. His booth was right in front of the Riv. Check out the sunburn on his forehead for proof.
Mike is out there everyday meeting people. Elections are won with votes (I think) and unless the residents of Graceland Cemetary come out on election day, regular voters are it. If money was a good indicator of a quality candidate, Helen was way better than James in 2007, right?
If money was a good indicator of a quality candidate, Helen was way better than James in 2007, right?
Wrong. The good indicator is raising a lot of early money that comes mostly from ward residents. Big difference. Now I wonder which candidate can make that claim?
I missed Carroll's booth. Between washing down my beers with Ribs I likely missed alot.
As for the sunburn on his forehead he needs to utilize sunblock. I get the SPF 100 and wear a wide brimmed hat. When that doesn't do the job I avoid the sun like a vampire and then use aloe on the spots I missed.
Now last time Shiller raised much more money than Jimbo. Relatively little came from ward residents. Someone more ambitious than me can look and break it down if they want.
Money isn't the only thing that matters, but it is something and right now Carroll is an also ran of the also ran money wise.
Time to lather on that sunblock and get back to work!
Just Wondering: I was being facetious. I thought it was clearly evident. My point is that raising money does not necessarily make a quality candidate - i.e. Helen Shiller. Just because James and Molly raised money, in or out of the Ward won't mean squat unless residents come out and vote. It could not be any more simple.
Additionally, the quip about "in the Ward" discounts any resident of the 46th Ward who cannot afford to donate over $150 to a candidate (look up IL election law about itemized vs. non-itemized). Carroll (or Phelan for that matter) could easily have more non-itemized donators (read voters), meaning all those loans to yourself could miss the target with no votes to back it up.
My two cents, they're free, though they may be Canadian pennies. And IP, I'll email Carroll and let him know to stock up on the SPF 100. I'll tell him IP sent ya.
IP - Carroll also loves carts! He drives a smart car!
You think we can "borrow" his smart and drive it inside Target while we shop? I'll call Helen and see if she's able to come out and play too. She loves Target.
Karen Boehning and her husband Tom Sharpe supported Helen Shiller in 2007. Sharpe even rented his 46th Ward Democratic Committeeman office to Helen during the last election.
In 2007, Karen loved Helen because Helen was a defender of the poor. In 2010, Karen loves Don who took a stance of not wanting anymore poor people in the ward. I wonder how important the issues are to Don's supporters?

My prediction is Helen announces in August she is retiring and Mayor Daley appoints Nowotny.

Last January, Molly was asking people to give advice about her campaign logo. Here's the website that verifies this.

If Daley doesn't run.........let the fun begin!
But how do you really feel IP? :)
ReplyDeleteFILIS,
ReplyDeleteI'm overwhelmed with a sense of ennui and futility.
The cognitive dissonance that surrounds me has given me a bleak view of the future of humanity and my own inconsequential role in that future.

To retain respect for sausages and laws, one must not watch them in the making.
