And The Beat Goes On

The 4500 block of Magnolia continues to experience reports of gunfire.  Many readers have written to us saying they heard a series of shots fired around 2am.  We hope there were many, many calls to 911.
  • Most alarming, "I heard automatic weapons fire coming from Magnolia on the 4500 block at 2:05. Ten round burst possibly from the alley. Knew it was an assault rifle from past military service."  That's the last thing we need, idiots who can't shoot straight, with assault weapons.
  • "I woke up right at 2am, and it sounded like 7 shots fired close together (4 and then 3). I'm on the 4500 block of Magnolia and looked out my window (which faces the alley between Magnolia and Truman College), but couldn't see anything. A few other people in my building also heard them, but couldn't tell where they were coming from."
  • Another reader, who was awakened at 2am, saw two men go into the yard near his home on Magnolia.  One seemed to be in a lot of pain and was limping.
We encourage everyone to call 911 whenever you hear things like this, or see suspicious activity.  Even if you (correctly) assume that other people have called it in, remember that the city looks at 911 activity when assigning manpower to various parts of the city.  As long as the gangs have decided that Uptown is their own private shooting gallery, and Ald. Shiller continues to pretend nothing is happening, residents need to be proactive and do all we can to get police assigned here to deal with the miscreants.

  1. I live right there but did not hear anything. However, I am not surprised.

At all hours of the day the gangs hang out on the corner of Magnolia and Wilson. They sit on the cars and in the parking lot. ALL EFFING DAY. I have only once seen a cop stop there. Come on!!! We know where this human trash sells their drugs at all hours and just ignore it. Then the cops show up after the shooting. WOW! Can we not stop the drug activity before the shooting. This is crazy! Its just plain stupid. How are they allowed to sit directly in front of no loitering signs and sell drugs all day. No one does anything. Of course the neighborhood is going to get shot up. Give me a freaking break. I am a huge supporter of the cops but this is ridiculous. Something needs to be done.

  2. Everyone knows the drug dealers but not everyone knows their costumers. Try taking pictures of people buying drugs or lisence plates of cars and then publish them. Someone is very likely to recognize a husband or a wife buing drugs. It works with johns and prostitutes so i dont see why it souldnt work with drug dealers

  3. Every time I pass Cubs park I see a mass of police from uniformed officers, undercover officers, dog team officers and even 10 or so swat officers in black and armed to the tee. Why can the city spend dollars on CPD security for baseball games and not sent some of those teams to streets as Magnolia, not too far away, for some time after mid-night patrols to rid the gangs out of that area that seem to always be a bigger problem then crowd controls at Cubs park.

  4. Quick public service announcement:

If you live on this block, please join the new GWNA block club. More info on facebook here:

As a community, we need to do everything we can to take our street back from the riff raff and this is a great place to start (of course, along with CAPS, positive loitering, new alderman, etc.)

  5. I heard it too and thought it was just loud firecrackers. I know some kids have been playing around with those in the last few weeks.

Well a simple answer would be that The Cubs are generating the revenue for the city to cover the added police. I assume they are generating millions of more dollars as well and the city deems it fitting to protect it's investment.

Now on the other side of that coin, the degenerates at Magnolia are generating negative dollars towards the city with the subsidized housing, the Link cards, as well as the lack of tax collected on their sources of income. All This COSTS the city money.

Our politicians are always more efficient and keyed in on revenue coming in, and not so much what goes out. Just ask the IRS. So to wrap up...

They NEED to protect their revenue stream at Wrigley to enable the Gang Bangers on Magnolia.

  7. I think it was likely a tech-9 or other 9mm automatic. I hit the deck when I heard it. (Not good for my ptsd :)

  8. It has been said the police camera is on but the blue light is shut off. It was said the light was shut off because a lady complained it annoyed her. What can be done to get the camera AND light turned on?

  9. El's right on target (no pun intended ;-)--it's going to take us, the people who want to live in a safe neighborhood to make that happen.

I live on Clifton and know where all the gang boys live, where they conduct their business and how they threaten any young teen males who come to visit their friends (these kids aren't gang members).

It's going to take a village to change things around here. The mindset today is the gangs own the streets, their club house is the Sunnyside Mall, Broncho Billy playlot since the alderman thought it was a wonderful idea to put a full size basketball court in the middle of a children's playlot, and that mall.

Solidarity, sharing information and putting pressure on the building and business owners is where we start. You in???

GWNA will be the hub to get things going. Sign up on www.facebook.com and search for Graceland-Wilson Neighbors.

Go to the next CAPS meeting--UU has it posted--I think it's Tuesday, August 3. Fill out the Gang and Drug Report form to report any suspicious activity. The more detailed the information, the faster you'll see people moving out and moving on.

On our block, we've successfully pushed to have several of the apartment-drug-sales offices removed. We're working on the next one right now.
