What Could Possibly Fix This?

A reader sends in the following:
"This is a photo I took back on April 6th, but it's not a unique occurrence. During the winter, this area would pool with slush and then freeze. What's not visible here is an about 12" sinkhole next to a sewer grate in front of that bronze car. This is on Sunnyside in between Sheridan and Broadway. I find it a joke that this is literally 100' away from the new Target, yet the infrastructure is just as sucky as the rest of Uptown. At least Broadway will have some nice sewers once the streetscaping is done."

  1. Take a look at corner of Magnollia and Leland -SW corner. Same-ol-same-ol. Thanks, Don!

  2. I live right around there, and have to avoid this lake after every rain.

I wonder if the Broadway streetscaping will help at least partially alleviate this... there's a fairly large and deep hole dug in the sidewalk on Sunnyside right at Broadway. Not sure if this is for sewer work or not.

  3. I live on this street and have made several complaints. Sometimes, even without water, the sink holes are so deep I can't open my car door.

Interestingly enough they redid Agatite, Hazel and parts of Winthrop. I don't know why they never got to Sunnyside, which really can use the love.

  4. Well I usually leave my unit through the alley, and I had to step over this lake one to many times before sending this photo in. I think this is a compound problem; Sunnyside is heavily slanted towards the alley, so all the rainwater flows from Broadway down to here and that sinkhole, which all the local drivers know to park around, is probably just impeding the water flow. I've learned now that when it rains, exit through the front door.

  5. Do you mean to tell me this is not the fish farm?

If not, perhaps the pirate can launch one of his ships. Arrrgh.

  6. Agitite repairs? I'm sure this has nothing to do with Hell's "Fawlty Tower" project?

  7. go here & report the problem to the city:

    https://servicerequest.cityofchicago.org/web_intake_chic/Controller?op=locform&invSRType=CHECKFOR&invSRDesc=Check-for-Cleaning&locreq=Y

i've used this request form before & found they're quite responsive.
