Pizza & Drug Deals

A reader writes in:
"I thought I would email in to let you know that I have seen constant drug dealing going on at Godfather's Pizza (corner of Malden and Wilson). For awhile, it was happening everyday (either right in front of Godfather's or in front of the building it's connected to: 4555 N. Malden). I called 911 multiple times per day for about a week and the dealing seemed to stop. Now it's back in full force and I not only saw multiple "exchanges" but the guys were basically setting up shop in the restaurant making "plans" on their cell phones today. All African American teens, white t-shirts, jeans- it's the same group of guys that I always seen hanging out on Wilson (between Magnolia and Malden) or on Malden (between Wilson and Sunnyside). I did call 911 each time I saw something happen tonight. I wanted to spread the word so that people can be aware and also call 911 each time they see something suspicious going on at that corner (believe me, you'll see something suspicious on a daily basis)."

  4. I reported this as well. A number of them live above godfathers and they often bring people up there or run up and down from the entrance on Malden just south of the Wilson corner.

  5. LOL re: sausage and crack.

Seriously, though, this really is too bad, especially since GF's has a nice patio that could potentially be a great spot for neighborhood dining. So, is GF turning a blind eye to this? Does anyone know if they have they been calling police?

Forword this to the Commander of the 23rd District. She may very well bring in a citywide narcotics team ( or other resources at her disposal)to remove this problem from the area. If that landlord has knowledge of the problem, he will have some explaining to do himself. He may be told to be more careful who he rents to in the future.

  7. Keep calling 911

Further - Call Godfathers and tell them if they are going to allow drug dealing within their store or entry, you are not only going to not order from them, but encourage others to do the same. Also, tell them that you are going to keep calling the police. At some point, arn't they aiding criminals by allowing illegal activity within their business.

They are members of this community and have a responsibility to the community to be good citizens too. They should be calling police. If they can't run their business because it is being overtaken by drug dealers, then they need to get involved.

Wouldn't be surprised if the pressure from all sides becomes too much to bear and more businesses shut down in Uptown.

  8. Sent....I encourage others to call/email as well.

    Dear Kathleen Boehmer,

I am writing you as a concerned citizen and resident at Wilson and Malden. Lately drug dealing has picked up on this corner and I am wondering what we can do to curtail these activities. Specifically, there a number (5-7) of African American males in their late teens or early twenties hanging out in this area. I believe a group/all of them live in the building connected to Godfathers Pizza. They frequently meet people on the street and then either bring them up to the building (I believe the address is 4555 N. Malden) or run in and out after taking an order. The activity has especially increased over the last two weeks and in talking with another concerned neighbor they had noticed and overheard them talking about transactions in Godfathers Pizza. I know this type of activity is rampant throughout Uptown and CPD is doing their best to prevent it, however, I figured it was my duty to inform you on this specific area.

Please feel free to reach out to me via email or give me a call at XXX-XXX-XXXX.

  10. They are selling heroin and crack. It was offered to me by mistake one not when the block boy was high. This a heroin spot.

  11. I meant to say "one night" (I'm typing on my phone)

They keep the crack in their mouth and the heroin and roxies oxycodone in the pocket.

  12. To follow up, go the Chicago Police Clearmap, select crime incidents, then search by beat.
Select beat 2311, then after the map loads, click "check all" at the bottom of the list of crimes. You must allow pop ups from this site to use it. I would say give the Police a week to see some results. The Police will be swamped and short-handed this week end, no doubt about that.

  13. I live near this corner and have personally witnessed numerous drug transactions. I have called the police on most occasions. They come south on Malden off of Wilson by about 20-30 yards to make the transactions, then buyer and seller immediately go in opposite directions.

I was shocked by the age of some of the buyers. I've seen buyers that appeared to be their 50's and 60's+.

  14. I have noticed the same thing! Buyer and seller go in opposite directions. I have video of one!

  15. OK, dumb question time: why do so many Uptowners "move the (illegal) merchandise" out in public rather than in the privacy of their homes?

Then again, as Jay Leno reminds us during his "Headlines" bit, criminals are often "dumb."

  16. As a longtime friend of the owner of Godfathers. A family run buiseness for 42 years. I know for a fact the owner has allways firmly told these punks to leave the establishment if they are not there for food purchase. Told them they will call the police if they do not leave the area. Amongst the things that are vandilized or stolen from there. I know for a fact the owner Susan would cooperate to resolve these problems.

  17. I would also imagine that the owners are afraid for their safety--so I wouldn't be so harsh with them. I have been a patron for a while, and they are great and are a mainstay in our hood. So let's help them out instead of talking about how they can't be crimefighters AND pizza maestros.
