Old... Old... Glory

A reader noticed that the American flag at Montrose and Broadway was not only in tatters, but also flying upside down on Memorial Day.

But never fear - just in time for 300,000 people to show up in Uptown for Independence Day, the flag guys came along and replaced it and the Chicago flag that flies beneath it. Crisp and clean and right side up for July Fourth.

  1. Not to get all patriotic and such, but there are rules which dictate how to properly display the American flag.

Allowing it to get dirty, tattered and to fly improperly is highly disrespectful.

If you're going to display an American flag, feel free to get yourself acquainted with rules, etiquette and codes here.

And, of course, if you don't have the time, desire or respect to follow those guidelines, please simply take it down.

Thanks to the flag guys (or gals) for doing the right thing.

Oh - and for the record for a few of our local establishments:

The blue star field (union) is always to the viewer's left.

  3. @Yo... um... relax. Absolutist chatter just turns people off. But yeah, an upside down flag is a sign of distress... maybe uptown is in distress? ;)

  4. Dustin,

My "not to get all patriotic and such" disclaimer didn't suffice? ;)

Regardless, if that's absolutist then it is.

I don't think it too much to ask that folks do the right thing from time to time.
