First Day Of Uptown Farmer's Market

We wandered over to the corner of Wilson and Clarendon to check out the first day of the farmers market and were pleasantly shocked. Not a lot of vendors, but we scored some great radishes, romaine lettuce and blueberries. The cherries were sold out in the first hour, so we'll be back earlier next week. The market officially opens at 8am, but several vendors (who hailed from Michigan) told us that they start setting up at 7am.

Several readers give thumbs up, too: "I just wanted to let you know that I scoped out the farmer's market this morning and it looks better than I thought it would. There were 4-5 vendors when Ii got there at 8 AM and they were giving away cloth bags. I am not sure how long the giveaway will last. one vendor has eggs, meat, and cheese. The rest have either veggies or fruit and jams. I saw a couple lettuce varieties, radishes, green onions, snap peas and green beans. For the fruit, I saw raspberries and blueberries as well as an assortment of jams."

And from our Facebook page: "Farmer's Market today. They have 4 or 5 booths with fresh fruits and vegetables. A booth with cheese, and homemade dog treats. A vendor was selling peonies too @ $7/bunch. It is in the parking lot just northeast of the Clarendon/Wilson intersection. They had complimentary coffee and donuts too. The rep from the City said they are going to have 3 more vendors coming in the next few weeks."

  1. i went pretty late and while it was small, i think it's phenomenal to finally have something like this in uptown. uptown has needed a farmer's market! while we didn't have much to choose from, we got blueberries, green beans, cucumbers and a bouquet of peonies.

i'll be going earlier every thursday!

  6. Farmers markets are the way to go! Does anyone still shop at that gold digger Jewel? At the Lincoln Square market opening I scored 8 tomato plants for $5, huge containers of fresh strawberries for $3 and a bushel of kale the size of a dump truck for $2. Andersonville market had a cool street musician, Wisconsin cheese good enough to make your heart palpitate and jams and spreads better than what Grandma whips up! Haven't checked out Uptown's market yet but am hoping that when I do, the experience is just as amazing.

  7. Sounds good! Thanks for the prices folks. I don't mind paying a little bit more to help out the little guys.

See you all there next week!
