A reader sent in this gorgeous photo taken Thursday evening. "Marine One flying right over recognizable buildings in Uptown, and I mean right over - like <1000 feet (though I'm a lousy judge of heights). Shook my place a little. They were flying back (west) to O'Hare after droppin' off the big man."
They flew right over Montrose Harbor very low... it was cool.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this woke up my infant son after finally getting him down for the night. Thanks, Obama!
ReplyDeletenice shot!
ReplyDeleteI saw Marine One and what looked like Marine Two and three military helicopters plying north over the lakefront last tuesday during the day. At the time I didn't know Obama was coming back to town and I wasn't quick enough with my camera to get a shot. I'm guessing they were doing tests to make sure everything was working fine then.

Presidential helicopter trivia:
ReplyDeleteMarine One is the call-sign of the helicopter which actually carries the Prez. Ala - Air Force One.
Marine Two is for the helicopter carrying the VP.
So far, when visiting Chicago, the President has used two identitical helicopters ("white tops").
Depending on the security situation, there may be more.
The non-Marine One choppers are, obviously, decoys - and each will shift positions, en route (presidential "shell game") to keep would-be ne'er-do-wells guessing.
There is always a third, non-"white top" which is a securty escort.
If the first family were onboard with the President, the call sign would then be Marine One Foxtrot.
How I do love the History Channel.
Just be glad it was President Obama and not President Palin. The image of Chip Douglas riding his big wheel down the lakefront bike path at 60 MPH disturbs me. "SARAH, SARAH, It's me, Chip Douglas........let's go rogue Sarah........"
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad the Presidential helicopter wasn't forced to make an amergency landing because of some random Uptown gun shot taking out a rotor blade. That would be embarrassing.
President Obama force landing at Montrose Harbor and then switching aircraft.......I'd love to see Daley explain that.
Presidential helicopters always seem to fly over Uptown. Whenever Bush was in town, they'd also go right over our neighborhood.
