Truman Construction Question From Reader

A reader writes in with the following question and photo:
"I am glad they are replacing the old concrete in front of the fire department at Wilson and Racine but I am wondering why and if this is somehow tied to the Truman Parking Garage construction? Does anyone know? Check out this link."

  1. Am I wrong or is the reason for the parking structure at Truman to provide parking for Target?

  2. A - Target has its own garage under its building. The Truman garage is just for Truman - and the community (who gave them TIF money to assist in building it) can park there for a fee on weekends. The Truman students park for free. Oh, and there will be CTA park-and-ride spots.

Lots of parking lots - and I thought Helen was trying to be a "green" alderman?

  3. Oh, and there will be CTA park-and-ride spots.

Right across the street from the L stop.

    How brilliant is that?

  4. Part of the Plan is to make the street next to the fire station a one-way going north past the Riviera and pancake house. Then, the fire trucks will use that path instead of Wilson to leave the station on its calls. They probably need to fix the driveway to help the big fire trucks make the hairpin turn.

  5. I know it's crazy, but could that just be infrastructure repair and improvement? That house rolls trucks quite a bit, and they're not exactly light weight.

  6. Thanks, it just looks like Target parking to me since it fits in more with the Target Store look.

yo- I'm assuming that's sarcasm, if that's wrong ignore this, but where would a better place for CTA park and ride spots be?

  8. That web link says, "In Fall 2008, Truman College began construction on the $55 million Larry McKeon Administrative Building, funded by the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago."

I guess whoever wrote that didn't notice that the taxpayers in the Wilson TIF pay $1,350,660 per year to pay for that garage.

Don't say thanks or anything. We're just here to be used.

  9. My guess is that they're replacing the firestation driveway because it was chewed up and crumbling. Notice they're using concrete instead of blacktop, which is probably to make it stronger. My question is why does it take over a week to do a driveway?

  10. Jason,
It is abundantly clear they are replacing the concrete in front of the fire station because of its poor condition. The question that was originally asked was why this was part of the Truman Parking Garage construction as listed on the site linked in the original post. We think TruthBearer answered it.
