Shots Fired; Person Hit

A reader reports (at 1:15pm): "Someone was shot at Sheridan and Windsor a few minutes ago. He was not cooperative with police, and refused medical treatment, said he would walk over to Weiss. There are several CPD vehicles in the area right now, officers searching the ground and a sergeant interviewing witnesses."

Sounds like a gangbanger playing the omerta/no-snitching card. Of course, what that translates into is "My gang will take care of it ourselves." Gonna be a long weekend.

Update: Another neighbor/witness who lives near Sunnyside & Sheridan writes:
"I heard 7-8 gun pops close by. I looked immediately out of the window and saw gang members on foot running out of the back of the laundromat and down Sunnyside. I could not see the actual crime scene because it was in the parking lot of the strip mall but within minutes I saw gang members running TOWARDS the location. One of them was running and holding his gun on his side under his shirt (the shirt flew up so I got a nice look at it).

My husband in the meantime went out to see what was going on. I stayed at our window. From the scene a group of gang members emerged. One of them was limping. I could hear their conversations -- they were talking about which direction the driveby shooters went and that they had to get them. The guy limping had taken a bullet to his leg, but according to my husband did not want to go to the hospital (surprise). My husband said that a couple plainclothes cops were the first to show up at the scene. They tried to convince the injured gang member to go to the hospital, but he refused and started leaving the scene. More cops showed up and two of their cars went against the one-way on Sunnyside to catch up with the group of gang members. Last thing I saw was that the gang members kept on walking and the cops kept on pulling over. No idea what came from that.

In the meantime more cops and a fire engine showed up. Cops were all over the back alley trying to find stashed or discarded goods (I did not see anybody throw anything)."

  1. Civilization ends right about where "Yo, yo, yo, yo -- NO SNITCH!" starts.

  2. Both the UPS guy and my mail carrier were witnesses. Ever get the feeling that the gangs are both shameless and sloppy around here? Who shoots someone in the a** on purpose?

BTW, the mail carrier said she sees the target standing on the corner dealing every day. (I wasn't a witness, so I've got no details beyond that)

  3. I'm always worried that what I'm hearing isn't gunshots, but when I heard those pops, I knew that's what it had to be and I called 911. I'm on Sheridan down by Montrose.

I'm wondering what sort of bad shot you've got to be to get off 7-8 rounds and still just hit the guy once in the ass. We're lucky no one else was hit.

  4. Is the graphic supposed to represent the gang-banger or the alderman's office?

  5. My sister and I were caught in the crossfire! It is ridiculous, the crime in Uptown is spreading like WILDFIRE!! In broad daylight to bear witness to such violence on a day-to-day basis in Uptown in becoming a regular event. It is sad how all of these things are happening right under the radar, and unless you happen to know someone who witnessed it first hand you will not have a clue about "Uptown". It has become the OK Corral for the North Side. The very person who was shot was on Sunnyside and Hazel at 3:15 laughing and talking to the Police about what happened.....Hospital band, bag of items and limp in tote...Horrible!

  6. This is attributed to ignorance and a lack of education. If we spent as much money educating kids as we did on two and a half wars, we wouldn't have this kind of crap happening.

  7. WTF, please tell me that they are able to make some arrests with the witnesses. Unlawful discharge of a firearm does not need a victim, right?

  8. And where is our lovely alderman leading the community to take back the streets?

Oh right.... The police are evil and oppressive. It's much much better to foster a community of drug addicts and gang bangers. They vote.

Wilson Yard is allowing people to move in. More voters.... more crime.

  9. Jesus....it's like 'West Side Story' gone-to-hell everyday now. There was a 'rumble' in the Malden / Magnolia alley last night. 911 is on speed-dial of course, but I couldn't tell if it was a 'party' or something more serious. The lines are blurred here.

Funny thing is, I never see 'condo owners' or 'well kept apartment dwellers' shooting each other.

Like a broken record, all the worst crap happens so painfully close to the 46th Ward office, it's puzzling.

  10. who said bangers have to be sharp shooters? most times they are blasting everyone else except for the intended target.

i wouldn't mind if a banger was good enough behind the trigger to pick each other off. bye bye!

it might be better to send bangers to sharp shooting school at this point. the alderman sure as he** isn't doing anything to reduce the number of stray bullets flying through the air.

  11. Losing faith in humanity, you are kidding right? Look at your tax bill and tell me what percentage of your taxes go to the Board of Ed. We are spending a ton on money on education. Some however cannot or will not be educated.

Meg, what do you mean "lockup witnesses"? Locking up victims or witnesses is usually frowned upon. As a matter of fact there was a time when we held them at the Area. We ended up paying out millions for that.

  12. Big Daddy,

The Chicago Public Schools are a billion dollars in debt. Read a newspaper.

Also, most of your taxes are being funneled into TIF slush funds not public schools despite what your tax bill might be telling you.

  13. i didn't say lockup witnesses. i said: WTF, please tell me that they are able to make some arrests with the witnesses. Unlawful discharge of a firearm does not need a victim, right?

make some arrests based on the eyewitnesses (not the victims who are not talking). arrests for UUW?

    Almost none, actually.

But 71% to the Wilson Yard TIF.

    71%.

    Seventy-one percent.

    71.

Actually shooting a handgun at anything more than about 20+ft is quite difficult and requires practice.
The violence will stop when most of the criminals are in jail. Which will not happen with Anita Alvarez in charge at the CookCounty State Attorney office. The cops can arrest all they want. But when the SA's office refuse to charge felonys and allow ridiculously lenient deals. Oh well. Also most judges are a joke in regards to leniency for violent offenses. We have enough laws on the books, we just need to demand that our political servants use them, I wager that most people don't care if you have to pack violent offenders into jails like sardines. Just keep them off the streets.

  16. Yo and loosing faith? you're right!!!
And especially the part about Wilson Yards...When I'm on my way to work every night I look at the free parking lot, and I only see 2 or 3 cars parked in that dump. I mean this is every night.I don't think it's filled up either.(mabie it's not low income enough)No money being spent on education or other alternatives= gangbangers.....PERIOD
