Another "Ghost Sign"

We had dinner at Sun Wah this weekend and walked out to see a "ghost sign" across the street, on the side of the building at 5110 N Broadway.  We poked around the web and found that it advertised Atlas Prager Beer, made right here in Chicago from 1891 through 1962.  If you look hard (and squint), it looks like the slogan says something about "Filtered."  Anyone got any more information about the sign, the building's history, or the beer?

  1. I L-O-V-E this stuff -- this is why we love living here...and people who live here do too!!! All the way down to the bricks below the street Too bad HellonEarth doesn't feel the same, "let's sell this place on the taxpayer." This is why we need change - 2011. Let's preserve while we can before we lose history and have a concrete jungle. -Frustrated

  2. Went to college in Rockford, Il, 1960 to 1963, drank Atlas Proger, If I remember right it was only about $4 a case of returnable bottles. There was another beer made in Chicago called Bull Frog, it wasn't near as good but only $2 a case, popular with college kids.

  3. That old German looking restaurant at the corner of Broadway and Winona has an old Atlas Beer sign on the building.

  4. Joe -- the building in this post is one building south of the building that looks like an old Bavarian restaurant. Interestingly, in the Google link you posted, there's a billboard attached to the the side of the building, hiding the "ghost ad." Kind of cool to think it was hidden for so long.
