When Target starts selling its wares in Uptown in July, 250-300 jobs will open up. Lorraine Swanson addresses O.N.E.'s attempt to call dibs on 20% of them, and addresses other rumors and "miscommunication." Read all about it in the Lake Effect News.
I predict that a plague of locusts shall descent upon Uptown just prior to the Target opening.
That will be followed by zombie attacks by land and killer pigeon attacks by air.
Crazed alewives will move in from Montrose harbor and devour most of the inhabitants of Uptown. I of course will survive the 300 foot seiche that comes in off the lake by riding a Daley/Shiller campaign sign west past Clark Street. I will end up soggy and wet in the parking lot of Crafty Beaver thanking the almighty for Helen Shiller......oh the irony.
Blech.
Target is coming. I imagine the problems involving shoplifting there will be worse than some Targets and better than others.
That's why they have security.
There is a time and place for reasonable criticism.
Pulling stuff out of your backsides just to cause controversy is silly, silly, silly as "da mare" might say.
There are many stupid comments that get posted here. I've posted more than a few myself.
I imagine the Target will be a net plus for Uptown. There will be problems with increased traffic and perhaps some other issues, but overall Target should be helpful to the community.
i'm a little surprised by IrishPirate's comment, but pleasantly so.
In a way, Target replaces the Woolworth's & Goldblatt's that were here last decade, but disappeared due to the corporations that owned them going bankrupt.
The jobs at target are an opportunity for an aldermanic candidate to show that they represent the WHOLE community.
The candidate can organize some resume counseling & interview seminars for Uptown residents.
By having sharp resumes and good interviews, Uptown residents could get more of the jobs at target, but in a way that is fair for anyone who applied.
There are all these complaints about section 8 housing, homeless & wild youth...why not help them with giving them the resources to get jobs in their community?
If people could get organized to post flyers for a last minute plan for Artists Residences at Wilson Yards, why couldn't they put the same effort for promoting job training (and deadlines/contact infor for Target)?
That will score some points for the 500 or so voters who honestly have reasons for voting for AND against Shiller.
Having visible proof of helping the less affluent residents of Uptown would sway those votes.
I was told by a super nice taxi driver two days ago that applications were *mailed* to Uptown residents by the alderman's office. I didn't receive one.... oddness
Entry-level positions will probably pay at or near minimum, which by July 1 will be $8.25 in the state of Illinois.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't a ONE demand that young persons get preferential job hiring discriminate against older workers who also need those jobs?
ReplyDeleteofficially, according to Target, no one will receive preferential treatment
ReplyDeleteI predict that the Target will have a TREMENDOUS shoplifting problem.

As for the rest of Wilson Yard time will tell.
I'm a shiny happy person so I always have hope.
