"The Broadway" Coming To Broadway

A reader tipped us off that there's construction going on in the long-vacant former Planet Smoothie storefront between Borders and T-Mobile.  So we did some asking around, and this is what we found out:  "The Broadway will be opening sometime next month.  It is a dessert cafe serving cupcakes, coffee, smoothies and pastries.  The owner is Kampen Egesa, the owner of the nearby local spot Kahawa House Coffee.  Please feel free to spread the word!"  We look forward to getting our sugar fix right next door to our books fix.  Best of luck to The Broadway.

Update:  A commenter says that "The Broadway" is actually Kahawa House, moving to a new location from its current location on Montrose.

  1. There's an independent coffee house moving next door to Borders? Borders>free wifi, all the books and periodicals you can shake a stick at, starbucks, sandwiches....I wish the guy well, but, for real?

  3. Borders cafe=expensive, so if they can compete even at just lower than Borders, I think they'll be good. Also, who's to say they won't also have free wifi? Plus it sounds like they'll have a wider array of offerings than Borders.

  4. I'm excited. I really like Kahawa but often go to Ch'ava or Winston's on Clark due to proximity. Hopefully they will have more seating than Ch'ava, where it can be hard to find a table. Borders WiFi is often running at a crawl, the coffee is so-so and the seating is less than comfortable for long visits. Moreover the pastries are made off site, sit in a truck and then the display case which shows in their taste. Kahawa has great sandwiches, is clean and the staff all seem to be having a great time. I would expect "The Broadway" will produce similar quality.

My bigger concern would be competition for The Cupcake Gallery given that cupcakes were the first thing listed in the announcement. Or maybe they will outsource the cupcakes to TCG and have a win-win all around.

  5. Just a point of correction here before this name "The Broadway" gets out of hand. It's just the same 'ol Kahawa from Montrose making a move to Broadway. There's just gonna be a wider selection to choose from, plus outside sitting for the good spring/summer weather to complement the Sunday brunch menu that's gonna be a new addition to the old Kahawa. As for Borders running Kahawa out of town....apples and oranges.

  6. This is great news. I live right across from Borders, but I can never justify going over there to hang out in their cafe and drink lousy Seattle's Best coffee. I'd much rather put my money into a local shop run by someone who knows coffee. I can't wait!
