Another neighbor taped the "boyish hijinks" (to go along with the "
attempted fisticuffs" of last summer at the same location)
last Friday at Sheridan and Leland, including the discovery by onlookers that they were being taped and the police response.
So the woman taking the beating while laying on the ground is in handcuffs while the one shown punching her is standing behind the police car ?

The question is this...HOW are we going to compile ALL of the evidence so people in this community can see what is being routinely tolerated right under there noses. Knowledge is power in some cases. I am constantly shocked at how unaware people are. I think we should set up a kiosk at the Ribfest this summer and encourage locals who actually live here to see what is going on.
ReplyDeleteThe alderman candidate who gets my support will be the one that shows compassion for the challenges faced by a lot of us here but also who pronounces ZERO TOLERANCE for uncivil behavior.
Good work for the tape and I hope it does some good. With summer not far I hope you got a lot of blank tapes as here in Uptown there is plenty to tape. Maybe if alot of residents took these type videos and turned them over to the right people something would get down to clean-up and clean-out this trash to make it healthly and safe for all the residents that live here....
ReplyDeleteMaybe we can, as a community, invest in some billboard advertising that shows some of these people doing "their thing". Better yet would be a video billboard where these can be shown. These videos are great for us to view on UU, but what about those that don't read the blog? They should be able to see what is going on around them.

How about you all moved to another area of the city where this stuff doesn't go on ? No such place ! There will always be this kind of activity . If you want to know why it goes on , why not go to the criminals and ask them why they do what they do and what they want out of life to stop doing it ? That might give you a better idea as to how to help solve the problem. And if your not willing to do that , then stop complaining about it .
ChiMscman - Most who live in Uptown or for that matter lives around uptown knows what is going on. Thats why the people who perform these acts of violence keep doing it and business continue not to come to our neighborhood. The issue is getting it to stop and by doing that we have to get Shiller out of office. A billboard against Shiller I would support.

ReplyDeleteFights happen everyday, all over the world, everywhere. On the school playground, traffic atercations, drunken idiots, etc. Are we going to video tape every little fight and discuss it as the how bad our neighborhood is? Come on. TV stations and billboards, that's hilarious.
Neil: I would add that people south of Irving Park probably don't know this is happening, and probably don't read this blog. Hell most people down there seem to think Tom Tunney is their alderman. While this may be a small sliver of Uptown, every vote counts!
ReplyDeleteJtizzle, you must not have watched much TV last summer, when all the TV stations aired a local person's film of the uptown riots.
ReplyDeleteIt became such a big deal that the TV stations covered the community protests against the violence at a meeting to discuss the olympics. That, in turn, led to all of the TV stations covering Alderman Shiller's humiliating meltdown when the protesters confronted her inside the building.
That, in turn, led to all of the TV stations airing the spectacle of the allegedly tough Alderman Shiller fleeing the building from a crowd of, in large part, middle aged parents and young gay men chanting "Run, Helen, Run" while she scampered out a back door.
You should watch more TV. It's amazing what you would see covered.
I have watched some TV in my day. I was at the protest last year when the infamous run schiller run event happened. Although I left a bit before she came out because of the rain and boredom.

I'm just saying a little scuffle is hardly newsworthy or worth talking about.
50 kids in the street throwing bottles and other stuff is. What happened last year is much different.

In fact I , more than everyone of you Uptown Updaters combined , have stuck my nose into problems Ive seen , stopping drug deals in progress , have demanded someone pick up their trash they just tossed on the sidewalk, interrupted fights in progress and not just sit there video tapping . And I do make eye contact and say hello to people I pass on the street .
And all of these examples go on much more in the 44th ward. Go to any Cubs games and you will see fights , littering , and yes...drug deals going on. Look up crime stats and I will suggest to you a dozen more wards in which you can move where you can complain about more serious crimes going on.
And calling 911 to complain about someone drinking , not acting a fool mind you, just drinking quietly or walking down the street is foolish and cops DO NOT want to deal with this stuff. ASK THEM !!!
Sure , occasionally a drunk will find his way to the middle of the street. Go down to Wrigley and you will see hundreds of drunks in the street .
So do something yourself besides complaining or yes , get out !!

You or I or LR could offer any non sequitur we wish. For example, a worse situation is occurring right now somewhere else in the world, the time zone, the state, the city, or the area code. Perhaps we should ignore what is local and turn our attention beyond our borders.

ReplyDeleteI'm not an expert on crime in the city , but there seems to be too much talk and not enough action. Blame Helen if you wish , but when you seem something wrong do something about it. Don't just come on here and complain.

LR- read your own post you did bring up other areas. You said "How about you all moved to another area of the city where this stuff doesn't go on ? No such place !" This statement seems to confirm you DID bring up other areas and you either are trying to back track or have selective memory.
ReplyDeleteI do get involved in the community. I have intervened in several incidents by both calling 911 and saying something to the ones causing a disturbance. However, I know when it is reasonably safe to personally intervene (gang fights, or other violent crimes are not for any of us to step in the middle of).
I believe that most people that post on here are actively involved in the community.

ASK THEM !!!" They may not like it but it is their job and it is a violation of the law so we should be calling the police. By the police dealing with the people "Just quietly drinking" it will stop them from eventually passing out on building stoops, benches or bus stops, urinating in alleys (or sides of buildings), stumbling out in traffic, starting fights, etc. It also sends a strong message that the police and citizens are not going to accept or put up with even the smallest of crimes in our neighborhood.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with those who are video taping these crimes and call 911. No one except the police should have stepped in on this fight or the "fisticuffs" that took place at this intersection previously (including you LR).

ReplyDeleteStatements like these are what belittle your argument. Of course more crime goes on in the 44th Ward. It sort of, kind of, definitely has that little, big, massive stadium with at least 81 home games that draws in 40,000 people not from the area.
Math alone makes such a comparison silly. Many Uptown Update readers appear to understand this basic concept. Hopefully you will come around one of these days.
