  1. WTF. Just drove through there on my way home. I knew you guys would have the info.

The police also were all over the corner of Wilson and Sheridan. I wonder if they are related.

  2. Great. Hope the alderman had a good view of everything from across the street. Ald. Shiller, just more "attempted fisticuffs"? What will it take to convince you that the gangs are destroying the quality of life in this ward, not "your political enemies"?

  3. The 21 year old was caught in the crossfire.

  6. Yes, it is. Unfortunately, I'll have to miss it because I will be out of town. I'll expect a full report.

  8. I walked right by Popeye's about 5 minutes before the shooting occurred. There were about 20 young African American teen males hanging out on the corner.

It was obvious something was going to happen. They were all nervously looking around, especially at the currency exchang across the street. Several were on cell phones. It makes me sad that I know all the signs of gang warfare after seeing it go on for so long.

  10. I wonder what the a certain person would say to the girl who was shot...

"Hey, this isn't your college campus sweetie."

    Sorry had to go there.....

  11. Lots of gang activity at Senn high school at end of school day related to the gang conflicts in Uptown. Several arrests were made and a large police presence. Figured it would continue back in uptown.

    ReplyDelete
  12. so is it that one gang goes to Senn and the other to Uplift?

  13. I wonder how the folks at Target feel about opening a new store from there in a few short months. Good luck!

  14. The bottom line is crime is not taken seriously in this neighborhood and the gangster kids know it. If it was taken seriously they wouldn't be selling drugs and shooting the place up every other week. The corner of Wilson and Broadway is a hangout for every bum and gang thug and has been for the 6 years I have been here. Nothing has been done about it besides the occasional lip service. I am counting down the days to get this alderman out of here.

  15. If any 46th Ward challenger needs a good campaign slogan for 2011:

"A vote For Shiller Is a vote for more crime scene tape in Uptown"

    See LEN's transcript at 4:41pm

    # 4:38 p.m. Police looking for weapons on N. Broadway, near intersection with Wilson. Needing crowd control.
    # 4:40 p.m. Shooters were at 4601 N Broadway, east side of street, shell casings found there… still looking for weapon/s.
    # 4:41 p.m. Cops calling for more crime scene tape.
    # 4:45 p.m. Six shell casings found at 4601 N. Broadway. Cell phone tip for SUSPECT VEHICLE, WISCONSIN 299RLF LICENSE PLATE .

And not that I think any of the gangbanger idiots even thought, or knew about it, but after the unfortunate death of Sgt. Haymaker in that accident Monday I bet this really, really isn't a good week to mess with the 23rd District.

  16. Tact. team took 3 regulars from the corner of Wilson and Sheridan. All 3 on the ground at gunpoint. Detectives checking all videos in the area. Round up the usual suspects.

  17. they should have a sub police station right there. like a satellite location for the district.

it seems like there is a shooting at wilson and broadway monthly or more

    ReplyDelete
  18. they need to move a station right next to that place and it will clea these fools out. I dont see too much crime happening in halstad and addison.

I bet the Police would love to have a substation there, at Broadway and Wilson. I also bet they would love to have a contract with the city to perform their duties, or cars that are not beyond repair and not safe, so as to prevent them from crashing on the way to calls. I bet they would also like to have support from the elected officials of the City. There are alot of things I bet they wished they had. Unfortunately they will not get any of these things that they wish for and we sit back and armchair quarterback and say they ought to do this or that, until we clean house from the top to bottom every Alderman and the Mayor need to go in 2011.

  20. Senn is heavily gangster disciple (gd)while area around Uplift is primarily vice lord/4 corner hustler. Area west of Broadway is primarily bloods.Once upon a time most of these kids would of all would of went to Arai junior high and then on to Senn, so even if they were gang rivals they had known each other since they were 11 or 12. Once the CPS changed things , these kids were not exposed to each other as much and began to just see each other as gang rivals. In a lot of ways , opening Uplift increased the gang conflicts .What's really sad is that there are kids who are not gang involved who are at risk just because of where they live.

  21. Not sure if this has anything to do with this incident (but I am pretty sure it does). I was walking home at around 3:30p.m. and I saw a LARGE amount of young African American boys running on Wilson from Sheridan towards Hazel and turned south on Hazel. I knew something was going to happen, but quickly crossed the street (to Uplift school side of Wilson). Luckily, there was 2 cops on that same corner. Didn't seem to bother the kids, but the cops were on them soon after to break it up. Looked like a fight of some sort going on. I wouldn't doubt this fight continued on with this shooting.
What really bugs me is that I have young children who I am trying to raise RIGHT, and they have to witness such violence just by walking home from school. I think I may have to drop them off and pick them up from school until they graduate.

  22. @ Katherine 5:30 P.M. response. Funny you mentioned that you seen a group of people loitering in front of Popeyes. Last week ago I called popeyes to talk with a manager to ask if they have issues with people loitering in front or near their area and I was informed that they do call the police but not as much because they expect the police to come by and chase the people away. I think that if more community store owners would take the proactive approach would help minimize the pan handling, fights and drinking.

  23. Again...what.....65 feet from the 46th Ward Office?
Since moving here in '91....such a grim downward spiral.
Yet the Ward office continues to ignore, and / or take such a defensive stance.

  24. On Saturday, two weeks ago, I was walking down Wilson towards the El station. There was a large group of people standing on the corner right in front of Wilson, and I wasn't able to walk behind the group, so I said "excuse me" and walked through them. I saw one of the older men taking something from one of the young thugs, and realized I had walked straight through a drug deal. Right in front of Popeyes, at about 1pm.

    Well put..

PB - You have no idea what you are talking about. Don't try to use Haymakers tragic death to further some aim of yours.

    Maybe you are a rookie.

  26. This could of been much worse the female victim was a young mother and at the time of the incident was pushing a stroller with her 1 year old child in it. She was shot in the thigh inches away from her childs head. These animals don't have the emotional or mental capacity to think before shooting into a crowd with women and children. I hope if caught attempted murder charges are filed.

  27. 10-20 minutes before the shooting, my girlfriend said there was a group of males all dressed in black and red congregating at the corner of Hazel and Sunnyside. Anyone know what gang that represents, and if they have been involved?

  28. PB, EXCELLENT POINTS !

Police and FIRE put their lives on the line daily. Proper Funding and contracts for them is integrel to our safety.

    Thank you for reminding everyone.

I am not a rookie and I do definitely know what I am talking about. You said that the Police ought to rent a storefront at Broadway and Wilson. I simply stated that they would probably love to do that, however they do not get to decide their own budget. For that matter they do not get to decide many of the things that determine their ability to fight crime and protect us.
They get what is leftover in the budget after the Mayor and the Alderman's pet projects are funded.

The Police in Chicago have been working without a contract for way too long. Much of the equipment they use is old or non-functioning. They do an admirable job with what they have.

You sir seem to be the rookie.

  30. Listen PB,

First of all, there are two Jasons on here so I am Jason (tfo). You act like the City hasn't offered any contracts. The City has. So stop it with the CPD union talking points.

BTW I fully support the police. Once the contract is passed it will be retroactive anyway. You sound like another whiner to me, definitely a minority on the force.

    Enjoy union fantasyland.

    ReplyDelete
  31. When are Chicago Union people going to realize that they work for the taxpayers, not the union? Never I guess. I come from a family of union public servants (fire/teacher.) I was always raised to believe that working for the City was a public service job first.

I shouldn't say that. Most City employees do realize this. It is a vocal minority (as always) that causes the fuss.

-----------------------------------You will notice some of these punks sporting red ball caps, and matching red shoes. Also coats with designer patterns on the back, and red as a part of the logo. Yes Jason you are on to something here. Another one sports a fur Daniel Boone style hat , and has been known to wear a hoodie in a vivid shade of light blue. He appears to be cross-eyed. They frequent Wilson from Broadway to Clarendon, among other places.

  35. PB,

    You are welcome! ;-)

No but seriously, I know nothing about you, so don't take it personally. You have every right to sound off on a blog.

I just hate it when people fall back on talking points.

The one thing we can agree on is that Haymaker's death really sucks. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

  38. It's crazy. I was driving down Wilson on 2/26/10. There was a parked squad car without an officer in it I guess to deter loitering or drug deals. what a laugh. there were 5 "hoodies" hanging around and I saw them transacting right infront of the squad car. I would have stopped to take a picture of it but there was no space to pull over. it was just west from the red Line el on wilson.

How funny it would have been to see a video of a parked cop car and drug transactions happening right next to the cop car.

These thugs live in a universe that they don't have any fear. Shooting in broad daylight, drug deals in front of cops and the flashing blue special cameras. The don't care.

This is the type of ward Shiller wants to retain?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hoodie have been dealing in front of cop cars in this neighborhood for 20 years. Now they opening deal and drink beers on the street right under the police camera by the McDonalds at Wilson and Sheridan, while everyone walks over to Winthrop to shoot up. Our patrol guys just don't think it is their job to deal with and our tact guys don't even work in our district half the time. This is the city's throw away neighborhood and Daley and Shiller like it that way. All police from above sargent rank are political appointees who need alderman approval so they, including and particularly our commanders, just hunker down and give the community nothing but talk, smoke and mirrors while letting the status quo go on and on.

  40. "How funny it would have been to see a video of a parked cop car and drug transactions happening right next to the cop car."

That used to happen all of the time when I was in Drug and Gang Housing. We would be getting out of the squad car and they would just do the deal. They new we weren't there for them.

  41. Unfortunately, this is nothing new, as anyone who has read Nelson Algren's "The Man With The Golden Arm" will attest. The cops, judges and local politicians were "owned" by the local drug dealer, whose accidental death at the hands of the hapless Frankie and Sparrow spurs the plot forward.
