Former Uptown Gangbanger Hits The Big-Time, Crimewise

If you're an avid reader of the 23rd District Court Advocate calendar, you'll recognize the name "Spencer Martin."  In a case that the Uptown court advocates followed through sentencing, he was convicted of attempted murder in a 2006 gang-related shooting that took place at the BP station at Lawrence and Marine.

Now, according to the Tribune, he's upped the ante and is the suspect in a cold case involving the murder of a federal informant:

A reputed Vice Lords street gang member was charged today with killing a federal informant in 2006. Spencer Martin, 32, of the 4200 block of North Broadway, was ordered held without bail on murder charges for shooting Earl Willis, 26, and leaving him for dead in a van on the South Side, authorities said.

However, no need to fear Mr. Martin knocking on your door and asking to borrow a cup of sugar or an unregistered firearm. He's currently residing in Stateville with an estimated parole date of sometime in 2117. (No, that's not a typo.) Nice work, cops and judicial system, and whoever worked the cold case file on the murder of the federal informant.

  1. And you would hope that the tale of Mr. Martin, one that ends with him in jail for the rest of his life after only 32 measly years, would be a warning to the rest of the thugs and thug wanna-bes, but I'm guessing it won't be.

  2. Damn, I read the headline for this post and I thought a former banger got himself appointed to some elective office or something.
