A reader sends in the following pic and writes: "This was a great thing to see this morning across from the Foster and Sheridan 146/147 stop. The demolishing (of Dominick's) begins!"
BikeManDan, not only is Dominicks going to rebuild at the same spot, but it's going to be a flagship store. They bought the old motel next to the original Dominicks to make room. So it should be a real improvement; the former store was, kindly, "dated."
Nice to see Dominick's coming back from the grave, not only here but elsewhere. The Foster/Lincoln store has also been razed for a brand-new facility, and the Ridge/Pratt store, which was closed a few years ago (thus depriving West Rogers Park of a first-rate grocery store), has reopened.
As I recall, Dominick's went through some serious financial difficulties a few years ago which may be the reason behind so many of their stores going to seed.
Dominick's had a lot of union problems. They would hire kids to be check-out cashiers. the kids would be working part time and take home a check for $300.00. The problem was, they had a $200.00 union membership bill....would you want to work there?
Dominick's has cancelled building all new stores except for this on and the one on Lincoln and Foster.
The orginal drawings are on the Edgewater Beach Neighbors (blockclub) yahoo group. They had many neighborhood meetings and updated the design with the mass input.
an honest question: why is this great?
ReplyDeleteb/c that location has been neglected by the Dominick's corporation and is long overdue and in need of an overhaul.
ReplyDeleteso Dominick's is rebuilding on the same location? That makes more sense. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBMD, not to beat a dead horse too much more but take a look at this post:

Tis a good thang.
hmm....maybe it's just me, but that Edgewater Neighbor's site is a bit odd. Everywhere I clicked it was membership info?
ReplyDeleteI just love the noise- 8am-4pm everyday so far. Sounds like a war is going on in my "front yard" haha
ReplyDeleteI went there without realizing that they were closing, the shelves were bare and it was like a filthy ghost town in there.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what else they plan on putting at that site besides the Dominics and the condos. Possibly an athletic center?
