Know what? There is something we should have learned by or forays into Iraq and Afganistan. While technology is great, it CANNOT replace "boots on the ground" (God I hate that term). Just as it has been and will continue to be, you need people on the ground/street to win whatever war we happen to be engaged in or to make a community safe again and keep it that way. All the cameras and microphones in the world will not be able to accomplish what a seasoned, hard working police officer can accomplish. This camera/microphone business is all smoke and mirrors. I have yet to see a crime prevented or solved by a camera. This is Daleys way of not hiring Police Officers. It's not going to work.
ReplyDeleteThere was a really great article about this technology in Wired magazine a while ago --Its a very interesting read...( http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/15.04/shotspotter.html ) , and it would triangulate the sound of gunshots very accurately, the actual response procedure was unclear for the Police. I think it's awesome technology.

ReplyDeleteActually cameras followed up by good detective work is probably a better way to put it.
My limited understanding of this technology is that it is still unproven. Mistakes firecrackers for gunfire etc.
Hell, let me stop at White Castle and I could probably make some sounds that mimic gunfire shortly thereafter.

ReplyDeleteWe all need to feel safe in our neighborhood, but we need to remember an old saying:
"Those who sacrifice liberty for security shall have neither."
Just think: the state puts microphones on telephone polls all over the city to listen to gunshots. Personally, I would eat my hate if the ones already deployed weren't turned on all the time, or at least at regular intervals. Even if you start out with the best of intentions, sooner or later, someone will come along and use the microphones to listen to private citizens conversations. We, as neighbors, need to monitor the modes of surveillance put in place in the name of security.
