Shots Fired At Lakeside & Sheridan

We're getting reports of "shots fired" on the 4700 block of North Sheridan Road, close to the intersection of Lakeside and Sheridan. Fortunately, no one was hit and there are no reports of damage. The police have recovered shell casings along the sidewalk.

One reader reported being outside cutting grass and still was able to hear 3-4 gunshots around 5:20 PM. Witnesses reported large groups of youths were involved in the altercation.

Update: You can see a video of the aftermath -- police picking up shell casings right in front of Cafe Too -- on UU's Facebook page or here on Vimeo.

  1. Yep - I heard 4 shots fired at 5:19pm somewhere near Lakeside & Sheridan. It was still fairly light out.

  2. Exactly what is it with that corner? Do those people live around there? If they do and they are in a gang why is it so difficult to get rid of them. Publish their address and names and post their pictures on the web. There should be no expectation of privacy.

  3. I swear....since I moved here in '91, I've never seen such savage and demented chaos.
I wonder why this part of town hasn't improved in 18 years?

  4. Shooting in broad daylight = no fear of reprisal. Now someone has to find the source of this reason.

  5. How much longer are we going to accept this from Shiller and from Daley? They both should be held responsible for this.
Please, please, please vote Shiller out in 2010

  6. Gang membership and politicians are irrelevant to the assignment of responsibility for each individual's actions. Gangs can commit no wrong acts; it is only individuals who are "blessed" with this capability. To declare that any individual other than the individual who has committed an act is responsible for that act is to surrender to the principle that each individual is a slave to another individual's passions. What a bleak world this would be if such a principle had any merit at all.

  7. helen schiller is the reason that nothing has changed for the good in uptown in years and years. she has to go. i was in the alley south of lakeside place and two cops were there, guns drawn, looking for the person(s) who fired the shots. they indicated "gang banger" activity. they asked me to unlock the gate to lakeside place so that they could get access. they asked where 915 lakeside was. is that the source of the problem?

We can't vote her out until 2011. However, I can cope until that day. You're one less person who spells her name with a 'c.'

  9. Sorry, Shiller. Doesn't matter however...she needs to go...can we do a referendum? This is a prime neighborhood for development. On the Lake, express bus and Red Line. Why has it not happened? There can be a balance of housing stock. Now there is no balance...nd little development on Sheridan...it all goes to B'way and Clark.

  10. Not sure when these desperate folks deemed it 'ok' to behave in such a lost, 'wild west' mode of operation.

Just traversing my alley on Malden/Magnolia today, I see guys planted firmly with cel phones awaiting the next cue, and tipsy gals staggering around like zombies.
Somehow, Uptown became a haven for all-things-wrong.
Driving from Andersonville home, I noticed 4 squad cars planting themselves near groups of puffy-coated thugs who scrambled like roaches.

  11. I understand the anger, but use of the word roaches is just not a good idea, man.

  12. Why do people say there has been no development or change in the ward? Is it because they have only been here for a year or so? There has been dozens of clean, attractive, new buildings erected in this ward that have replaced vacant, run down, or abandoned buildings including the vacant bank and fast food place that were across the street from each other at Leland and Sheridan and now have large condo buildings in their place. There has also been a lot of rehabbing of older buildings in the ward. All of that has happened with the support of alderman Shiller. And if people haven't noticed, real estate development has basically come to a halt all over the city and country. There are a lot of unsold condo units in Uptown, so I don't think there is really a market for more development at the present time, both residential and retail.

  13. ha! thats funny sean -- all of the small businesses have stated that shiller has not supported them at all.

  14. Um.....Sean, this post is about shots fired in front of Cafe Too at 5:15 in the afternoon. Folks having dinner in the front of the room asked to be moved to the rear after the gunfire. That's probably not a good thing for their business.

Just the day before, they were featured on Check Please. Can you imagine if this occurred during filming?
