Man Dies In Fall At WY Construction Site

From Chicago Breaking News: "A Chicago man died this morning after falling from a height at an Uptown construction site that once housed a CTA rail repair yard, authorities said. Marius Marcus Orza, 20, of the 1600 block of West Sunnyside Street, was declared dead on the scene at 1026 W. Montrose Ave. at 7:30 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He appeared to have died following a fall from a height, although a determination of his cause of death will be made following an autopsy Monday." Read the whole story here.

  1. I send my condolences to this young man's family and friends if they should come across this message. Twenty is much too young to die and I am very sorry for your loss.

The 1600 block of W. Sunnyside is in the 46th ward, no? If it is, then it is very sad to think of a grieving family in the ward this evening.

  2. Stupid question but what was this person doing there? Was he a construction worker? My condolences to the family.

  3. Not stupid questions, Daniel. It was 7:30 am Sunday morning. Were construction workers even present then?

  4. Yes, my question exactly - I know that unions, contractors, etc. take safety VERY seriously....was this man part of the Walsh team or a trespasser?

Regardless it is sad, hopefully any further reporting will be very clear what this man was doing at this site.

  5. Yes, they were doing construction Sunday morning. I live at Montrose and Kenmore and heard them all day yesterday working over there.

This is so sad~many thoughts to the family.

  6. Sometimes subcontractors are lax about safety. Was this man working outside hours approved by Walsh? Did he have on personal fall protection? Does the site have required fall protection measures installed?

  7. I also live across the street from the construction site and the noise woke me up Sunday morning. I looked out the window to see what they were doing and saw the body and police activity.

What I don't understand is what he was doing there. He was obviously not there to work dressed in gray slacks, white shirt, black jacket & street shoes -- not even a hard hat. If he fell, the only place he could have fallen from is the roof.

Something doesn't feel right about this at all.

  8. honestly, as tragic as this is, I am surprised it is the first time we are hearing about people being on site when they shouldn't be.

Looking at that fencing and "security" I'm often taken a back at how easy it would be to slip into the construction site. There's often a gap in the gate, even if it is locked. Materials and dumpsters are left up against the fence to make it easy to jump over.In the back, there are parts where it is completely open.

If I were homeless or looking for a private place to do "business" it would be very tempting especially since the weather has turned.

  9. Is it possible that he was tagging or attempting to tag the building with spray paint?

  10. "Tagging" while wearing what sounds like a typical go-to-work/church outfit on Sunday morning? Don't those guys usually dress top-to-toe in dark colors so as not to be seen at night?

  11. I had class with this young man. He was a very intelligent man. Grief counselors came to class tonight to talk to us about his death. It was sad for every one of us to hear. My deepest sympathy to his girlfriend ,who sat next to him in class, and his family. I would agree to please refrain from making judgements about this person that I knew very little, but respect what I know.

  12. @Art, how did you know this man? Where did he have classes? Do you know if he was from New York? When was the last time you saw him?

  13. @Art: Would you mind contacting me about this person? I am desperately trying to find out if he was a friend of mine, and hoping he wasn't. Please let me know any information you have on him. If you have any pictures they would help immensely.
