Cornerstone Security Guard Arrested On Drugs Charge

On July 29th, a security guard employed at one of the Cornerstone shelters on the 4600 block of Clifton was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

Several 23rd District court advocates were in attendance at the preliminary hearings of Samuel Dukes (alleged buyer - case #09CR1562802) and Wanda Williams (charged with delivery of a controlled substance - case #09CR1562801) at 26th & California earlier this week; the court advocates will be following the case as it continues.

The next hearing will be held on October 1, 9:30am, Courtroom 304 at 26th & Cal. If anyone wants to attend as a court advocate, please call CAPS at 312-744-0064.  Samuel Dukes is currently out on bond; Wanda Williams is being held on a $4500 bail amount.

  1. To anyone who questioned during the “riot video” discussions “what kind of influence does an alderman have over crime – what can Shiller do – she’s just an alderman.” The opening of this shelter is a prime example.

Nearly a hundred Uptown residents took time off of work to oppose and testify against the opening of this shelter and against the wishes of Shiller who was flanked by her campaign-paid (and TIF-paid) attorneys.

You know the end of the story the Alderman won and kept a couple hundred votes in her ward. Votes are so much more important then the safety of the community.

  2. This happened awhile ago. Is there any statement from Cornerstone?

  3. Does anyone have a physical description of the guard? Three weeks ago, I saw a security guard (African American, 6ft 300 lbs) buy drugs at Sunnyside and Malden at approximately 6:00p.

  4. I wonder if Conerstone is even aware of the legal situation of its employee? Nice that a "Security Guard" is bringing drugs in such close proximity to a high risk population. So many people who are homeless have serious sub abuse issues themselves. They go to shelters to avoid for a short time the temptation to use drugs. If a client is caught with drugs they are supposed to be asked to leave the shelter, I hope the shelter would do the same for an employee.

  6. This shelter as well as many others are just disgusting. The guards that work there also sell drugs to the ones in the shelter. Not all but a few are being run by people who have only interests in milking the governemnt of money and doing as little as possible for the ones who need help in them. The gangs on the streets that sell drugs have also interests in a few of the shelters here in Uptown and little is done to expose them. Ask some of the homeless that go to them and they will tell you what really goes in inside them. They all should be investagated but with a alderwomen as we have its to her benifit not to do so....

  7. I did not know the shelter was there until this summer so when I had some items to donate I thought that would be a good place. I took an entire set of dishes in good condition to Cornerstone and I will never go there again. I was made to feel like it was an inconveniece that I was there. It was a Saturday afternoon and there were less than 10 people in the building. I just wanted to let someone know I left the dishes sitting on the counter so no one would be concerned there was a big box that just appeared. I was directed to a lady sitting at the dining table by someone that was cleaning the tables and when I approached her and the group she was speaking with they all looked at me like I was interrupting them, what did I want, why was I there. I told the lady about the dishes and she basically just looked at me. She did ask if I needed a donation slip and I told her it was not necessary and then she turned and continued to have her conversation with the others. This was not a work meeting, it was a group of friends sitting talking. I had considered volunteering there to help the community but I don't think it's a good idea. Even though it was in the afternoon, I was very uncomfortable with everyone on Clifton Street hanging out because I smile and say hello and am met with dirty looks.
