Property Tax Appeals

Property tax notices went out to homeowners in Lakeview Township late in July. Not a sexy subject, but an important one. Why should you care? Why should your association definitely file an appeal? Read and learn in the Lake Effect News: Your Most Frequently Asked Questions. An excerpt:

"Typically, taxpayers want to appeal their taxes after they receive their tax bills – but that is too late. Appeals must be filed to challenge the Assessed Value. Taxpayers should appeal their Assessed Value as soon as they receive their Notice of Assessment from the Cook County Assessor’s Office."

From Ald. Smith's Mid-August newsletter: "Help with Property Tax Assessment Appeals." The Chicago Tax Assistance Center will be coming to Northside Aldermen's offices to help people file appeals of their proposed property tax reassessments. The assessments for our area were sent out in late July, and property owners have 30 days to file their appeals. At these sessions, City staffers will take information and explain the appeal process.

The dates for tax appeal assistance are:

  • Thursday, August 13, 3-8pm, Truman College, 1145 W. Wilson

  • Friday, August 14, 2-5pm, 47th Ward Office, 4237 N. Lincoln

  • Tuesday, August 18, 3-8pm, 47th Ward Office, 4237 N. Lincoln

  • Wednesday, August 19, 3-8pm, 48th Ward Office, 5533 N. Broadway

  • Thursday, August 20, 3-8pm, 40th Ward Office, 5850 N. Lincoln

  1. Having City staffers there to advise on how to appeal property taxes? They are adverse parties!! Whose bright idea is that?

Lets see, you owe me money, so I am going to help you figure out how you can get away with paying me less. Hum.

This was on Alderman Shiller's website a week ago, and that was the first thing that came to mind.

  2. Of course they have to keep jacking up our property taxes to make up for the millions in property taxes pouring into Daley's TIF bank account.

Wilson Yard is devouring 68% of our property tax money this year. And that figure will go up even higher next year.

Soon only the very rich and very poor will be able to live in Chicago.

  3. I went today and received great one on one help with appealing my assessment. I also went downtown last year to file an appeal (can't remember the term off hand) and they were fabulous and got me an almost $800 refund. Remember many of these city staffers own and pay taxes too. It's not like they are tax exempt. From what I can tell, everyone wants lower property taxes, including those I've received help from and I have always received great service and help.
