Just "Exuberant Youth" ?

A reader was walking his dog at Sheridan and Lakeside (just a few feet north of Sheridan and Leland) on Saturday morning and found all these items stashed in the bushes: a heavy bike lock, two bricks, a tree branch, two pieces of lumber, a beer bottle and a tire iron. Now wouldn't these come in handy if, by chance, you wanted to take over a part of Sheridan Road and fight a rival gang in the streets?

This is why we're protesting this evening. This is a family neighborhood, a neighborhood many of us love. It's our home. Yet these items and the mobs who use them are making our retail corridors look like Third World nations after the sun goes down.

We care, and we want the people who represent our interests to care. Please show up tonight at Truman College at 6pm, with a sign, as a symbol to show we don't want a neighborhood where bricks, tire irons, and tree branches rule the streets. At least one local newscast says it will be there covering the story. Be there to tell it.

  1. At the end of the logical string of rocks, sticks and metal is, of course, gun powder.

  3. I have also seen wood clubs, pipes, bats and bricks hidden behind the Maryville empty building inside bushes wrapped in plastic bags that punks hid their. I called the Police and they got rid of them...

  4. I think part of the solution would be an Alderman that worked with building owners, schools, community orgs, law enforcement etc. and had zero tolerance for this crap.

  5. I called 911 about these items a few times and nothing was ever done about it.

  6. I think it is becoming ever more clear that the citizens have to take back the neighborhood. Our elected officials obviously have their own agendas.

We will have to do it ourselves even after Helen is gone. One new alderman can't take back the neighborhood on their own.

  7. This isn't an issue for the police alone as it will require the active participation of community residents, business owners, and allies to stand in opposition of the thugs, sign criminal complaints, and attend court hearings en masse.
All of which Alderman Shiller must fully support.

  8. I've had PC trouble the last few days and am as outraged as everyone else who loves this area.We could use a dedicated contingent of Guardian Angels on patrol at night on the streets here, more police driving up and down letting their presence be known and yes group dog walks by residents.I was almost killed here by a punk 19 yrs. ago and it kills me now to see these punks attempting to intimidate us now.
