Uptown Bakery Closed By Health Department

From a Chicago Department of Health press release:

Ignored Order to Thoroughly Clean Premises. A North Side bakery remains closed this morning after being shut down Monday afternoon when Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) inspectors found non-compliance with an order to thoroughly clean the facility.

La Patisserie P, 1050 W. Argyle, was ordered by CDPH on July 6 to thoroughly clean the bakery’s walls, floors, food equipment and containers, and shelves---all of which had varying degrees of accumulated dirt, grease and dust. Bakery management also was ordered to remove the clutter in the kitchen and storage areas.

Yesterday’s re-inspection found no compliance, which automatically escalated the violation from “serious” to “critical.” “’Clean it up’ means ‘Clean it up,’” stated CDPH Commissioner Terry Mason, M.D. “We take food safety seriously, and we expect all food establishments to do the same.” La Patisserie P will remain closed until it has corrected all violations and passed re-inspection.

The enforcement action was the 119th time in 2009 that Health Department inspectors have shut an establishment for food safety violations. Representatives of La Patisserie P are scheduled to appear at an administrative hearing on August 20 and pay a fine expected to total $500.

Chicagoans who believe that a bakery or other food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to report it by calling 311 or logging onto http://www.cityofchicago.org/.

Update: La Patisserie P was re-inspected on July 17, passed (no violations at all), and has reopened.

  3. Interesting. I've bought from this bakery often. I am surprised, but hope they correct this problem.

  4. Their "papers" were clearly not in order when the inspectors arrived. "Here, I made this pie especially for your wife. There is an envelope in there....its just a card, really."

  5. But it's called "La"xxxx. Doesn't everything with "La" mean fancy and chic? Gotcha' ---- hook line and sinker.

  6. I love this place. It's a family-owned bakery, used to be Asian only (I think it was called "Hong Kong Bakery"), but then the son took it over and added French pastries to the traditional fare a few years back.

Hope to see it reopen soon and stay on the good side of the law.

  7. The City is extremely money hungry with the existing budget problem. They are hitting up businesses all over the place for awnings hanging over sidewalks, their payroll, health code, and licenses. They have a track record of "changing the rules" midstream and of course they don't communicate the changes to businesses and so many of them are in violation and have no idea why.

Of course in this case, health code is serious so yeah, "clean it up!"

On a side note, just wait to get your first water bill if you haven't already with the new automatic meter readings. The City has been estimating water usage since 2004. With the new meters they take an actual reading and slam customers with huge balance reconciliations.

The City is really screwing with all of us with stupid stuff and really neglecting things like crime and safety which needs serious and immediate improvement.

    Signed,
    Frustrated.
