The Latest On Fix Wilson Yard's Lawsuit

ChicagoTalks has an article on the continuing court fight over Wilson Yard and how our taxes, when converted to TIF funds, are being spent. An excerpt:

The original redevelopment plan included mixed-income housing, a movie theater, and retailers Target and Aldi’s.

Eight years after the original plans, Aldi’s was built but not in the original location in Wilson Yard, there are no plans for a movie theater, mixed-income housing is being replaced with low-income housing, and Target has not yet committed to build in the complex.

Representatives for Target declined to comment.

  1. “I believe in disagreements; I think it’s healthy,” said Davis. “I think we may not completely agree, but we can sit down and come up with some kind of medium to what we both can live with.”

Well then it turns out we have a VERY healthy ward, I know I feel better! Can't wait for the meeting where we all get to sit down and discuss the issues.

  2. Wow - doesn't Denise Davis sound like an angel in that article?

“I believe in disagreements; I think it’s healthy,” said Davis. “I think we may not completely agree, but we can sit down and come up with some kind of medium to what we both can live with.”

Really? Her standard response to any resident who disagrees with Shiller is "this ain't your college campus sweetie" or "Get out!"

She also states that the increase in TIF funds will not come from local residents - “We have more money coming in because of businesses coming in and the businesses that are already here have produced more money than first anticipated,” said Davis.

Denise - care to expand on who those businesses are? I haven't seen a dramatic increase in local businesses (in the 46th Ward) within the last several years.

Does she believe her own lies?

  3. The only businesses I see coming into our uptown is mostly from drug dealers and hookers not the local residents that have to live in this type atmosphere.

  4. Isn't the wilson yard lawsuit pretty much dead? They're building the darn property.

  5. And now we know why Denise Davis is not involved in economics.

If the city spends any money, the residents pay.

Either through sales taxes whatever businesses she's mentioning pass on, or via higher taxes and/or fees which could arise from .. oh, let's say, the city running out of money.

Has she parked at a meter, recently?

    What a dolt.

  6. Ms. Davis must REALLY not understand how TIF districts work.

TIFs are complicated, and I could see how one might not get details 100% correct. But her quote is so off base, that either:

    1. She is completely in the dark and just spews nonsense or whatever she thinks sounds good for the moment and the situation.

    or

    2. The reporter "misinterpreted" what Ms. Davis said.

    I'll go with #1.
