Fresh Feast At Fresh Harvest Tonight

We are getting word of a free cooking demonstration tonight at 7 PM at Fresh Harvest Market, located at 4650 N Sheridan. A professional chef will be on hand and free samples will be available. We are also hearing that Fresh Harvest is planning on making this a regular Thursday night event. Yum!

Please stop by and visit Uptown's latest place to meet and greet, and now to eat!

  1. I spoke with the owners, they are hanging on but REALLY need business to pick up... Please support them whenever you can...its great to have a quality store like this in Uptown...and they employee quite a number of people for a smaller establishment...

  2. This is a wonderful independent store and they want to be very good neighbors to the community. It's this kind of store that helps to make Uptown unique.

  3. Stopped in for a few groceries tonight and I stumbled across this wine/cheese/chef demo. Stuffed chicken breast and risotto was a nice surprise. Glad to see Fresh Harvest stepping things up and catering to the community. Bam!!!

  4. I been in the store too and it is great. Its hard to find parking and the streets around it are not too safe at night. I wish it was in a better part of Uptown.....

  5. Maybe it can become part of a TIF district. I hear TIFs are great when it comes to building parking lots.

  6. Barry -- it's not THAT bad. I'm a young female and walk there at night. Plus, it's only open til 9, so it's not like you're walking there at 1am. You want businesses like this to venture into the so-so areas to have more "eyes" on the area. Street parking is plentiful on Leland. Great store; please everyone visit!

  7. I agree - we now shop here weekly for our perishables. Considering we don't have a farmer's market in Uptown, it's a great place to get our fresh items.

I also heard that they were working on a grocery delivery service to help drum up business.

It really is a nice store with very helpful and pleasant staff. Go support them!

  8. Barry, who often has very insightful comments, seems to find fault with many things..kind of like an Uptown Debbie Downer... so take it for what it is.... I too live in the area and find it to be safe.....

  9. I live 2 blocks away from this store and it's fairly safe. Honeystly, the only real issue is typically prostitution on Leland, but that's in the early morning hours typically. And they only hang around until Irish Pirate picks them up.

Weekend made a very good point that it's only open to 9 PM, so it's not like folks will be going there late anyways.

It would be nice to support local, independently owned businesses like this one - grocery stores with perishables usually have a very small profit margin (even when they are big chains). Unless you want Uptown to turn into Lakeview and this store to be replaced by a Jamba Juice or Potbelly. What am I saying? In Uptown it'd just turn into more low income housing or another vacant storefront thanks to our wonderful alderman.

As for parking, you can park on Leland (just north), but it can get busy when the kids are let out of Christopher House (3:30-5:30 PM). You can also park on Kenmore (one block west) until 6 PM (permit) or Winthrop (two blocks west) any time. Just as long as there is not a show at the Riv or Aragon, then you will have trouble parking anywhere.

  10. I was very excited to support Fresh Harvest and went in one morning before work. I picked up a pastry and a small chug of chocolate milk (I know not a big spender, but I'd rather give them the $$ than 7-Eleven). When I got to work I found that my choco milk was 3 days past due. Normally I am pretty grossed out by expired dairy and at 6 months pregnant there was no way I was going to touch it. It was a bummer and something they DO need to be on top of. I know this was not an isolated incident as others have posted the same problem. I just didn't remember to look before I bought.

  11. MarathonMan,

I'm only picking those ladies up so I can get some contact information from them.

I intend to make a large donation to Helen Shiller and a larger donation to Mayor Daley. I will also hire some Mayoral Relatives as consultants.

My new venture: A HO training center. I will of course need some TIF money to fund "HoTown".

I want these ladies to learn how to manage their money well so they can get educated and move on to political positions. Perhaps even elective positions. They are clearly experts at "positions".

Yes. The Leland hos need role models.

Shiller/Daley/et al, are all master whores.

  13. Irish Pirate - only problem with your plan is that you're being way too specific to get TIF funds. You should be more vague in the future.

On the other hand, I do think your idea is brilliant. Talk about transferable job skills. It's like the Inspiration Cafe...but maybe you can call it the Inspwhoration Academy.

Only one problem - don't you think the hos on Leland will be more ethical than da mare or even our spectacular alderman? You'll have to have a rigorous program on Laws and Ethics...and how best to intentionally ignore and violate them.

  14. Looks like we have to watch our wallets and expiration dates. I've noticed buying cheese on sale at Walgreen's the date can be past.I pointed it out once to a girl stocking and was stopped and asked at the door by an asst. mgr. if I had a problem!!! I told him Walgreen's would have a problem if someone gets sick.Support the locals and help keep it fresh.

  15. Fresh Harvest is Awesome and has the BEST turkey breast brand--if you enjoy deli meat--boar's head--and their deli meats APPEAR to be more expensive than that of a chain grocers b/c they mark it per pound versus 1/2 a pound--I gave them that tip--at first it may appear as though they're more expensive--but they are really not. The produce is always fresh--and once in awhile, when I am in the mood for a salad--their salad bar is impeccibly fresh--even more so than Whole Paycheck's (Whole Foods), albeit not quite as extensive.

  16. emily, i totally agree :) and i love the "good finds" you can get here -- like yesterday, i picked up baklava! the week before, pretzel bread! the week before that, some fresh guacamole!

  17. I live a hop skip and a jump away from Fresh Market and I couldn't be happier to have such a great grocery nearby. Their producs is always fresh and cheaper than Jewel. Here are a few must try items: Their sweet potatoes are huge and delicious, they sell Pastor Meat at the meat counter that tastes just like Carmela's, and their Gelato at the front counter is great. Also, the staff is always friendly and helpful. I even saw the owner sweeping the alley behind the store last week. Talk about going above and beyond! If we want more appealing retail in this neighborhood we need to support these guys and other Uptown businesses.

  18. Anyone ever seen Fresh Harvest Market mentioned on Alderman Shiller's website? How about Uptown Business Partners?

Maybe I'm too cynical, but here a merchant opens supplying fresh produce, meat, deli, cheese, gelato, flowers at competitive prices in an American era where we desperately need meals prepared from start to finish consumed together as a family and the Alderman and the Chamber can't even mention Fresh Harvest Market?

If you even catch some CAN-TV programming you're going to see healthy eating is absolutely vital to the future of urban populations. Many neighborhoods are underserved through underdevelopment that hits them where it counts the most in the long run - their human health.

These are the kind of issues where leadership is so absent in the 46th Ward and the Chamber of Commerce. Can Fresh Harvest Market get drafted into WAMA? Adopt this merchant.
