Do Ya Like Good Music?

Do you like sweet reggae?
Of course, you do! Well, here's something you might have guessed: It sounds sweeter if it's played in the right setting, say a coffee lounge. That's just what Nixon Omollo thinks! In fact, he and The Survivors have decided to play their music this Sunday at 6PM at the very cool Kahawa House Coffee Lounge, located at 838 W. Montrose Ave., one block east of World Gym.
Come on out and chill with a smoothie or a coffee, depending on what our crazy cool weather brings, while the band plays reggae music so sweet you may not need sugar in that coffee. So come see a great band, featuring the man whose music is played on Kenyan radio. It may be cold outside this June, but inside K House this Sunday at 6PM there'll be reggae that's hot, hot, hot...and ever so sweet!

  1. There's a cover charge, right?

It would be nice to know so I can bring enough cash.

  2. Doesn't appear so Sarge. I think just buying a great cup of coffee or a smoothie is all that is asked. What a deal!

  3. I find it hard to believe they won't be hitting people up for donations, but I'll take your word for it. Thanks!

  4. Does Kahawa House run this blog? Seems like every week there is post for it.

  5. Do you have a problem with it, Jacob?

  6. No, Jacob. But, I'd read posts about Kahawa House changing their coffee filters if it helped get the word out about Uptown's locally-owned businesses! We have a severe problem with critical mass here and anything that strengthens our small business community here will eventually strengthen the neighborhood as well.

  7. I find it interesting when people like to speculate about businesses running this blog for their own benefit. billyjoe used to always say that it was the Wild Pug/Crew owners because the bloggers "always" posted their events.

Maybe it could be that the owners of this blog are just hoping to support local Uptown businesses? Maybe they don't have ulterior motives?

    Sheesh.

  8. I agree with Jacob as it seems this business is always in the news here compaired to others. I live 1 block a way and to tell the truth it is no different from any other coffee house I have visited. The only difference is I don`t see all the rat packers hanging out in front of the entrance begging for money like there is in others parts of uptown..........

  9. Four mentions in 2009! Wow, if UU owns this place, it's doing a piss poor job of promoting it. Seriously, Kahawa House is a great neighbor; it hosts community meetings for no charge. It's exactly what we say we want more of in Uptown. It's locally owned, it's involved with the community, and it's bringing new stuff to the hood. Mayhaps those who are complaining would prefer a chain that has the same menu worldwide, plastic booths, and can't doing anything without checking with the head office in Pierre, South Dakota?

  10. UU promotes LOTS of our local businesses. And they do it for free. I can only speculate it's because they love the neighborhood and are doing whatever they can to save it. If we all worked so hard for Uptown...

  11. Wow, interesting to see how passionate people are about Uptown and Uptown Update; that or they have nothing better to do. I have nothing against Kahawa House at all. It's great that they are doing events--although I think their products are average--and that UU is supporting local businesses and affairs. I was simply making a tongue-in-cheek comment based on the observation that I have seen it quite often on the site. You can all now relax, another fine Uptown establishment and the will of its citizens has been honorably defended.

  12. Good to see some "social" events taking place on Sunday night, a time when many other entertainment venues go dark. Especially in summer, it's nice to be able to take advantage of the warm, sunny evenings (we ARE going to get some pretty soon around here, right?)

  13. That's right! No cover, no donation, no joke! (No quite understandable cynicism required.) K House just wants butts in seats buying joes and eats tomorrow.

I can't go on without saying this: What a great thing UU does by allowing regular peeps like me to plug their fave places to go! That's how all of us can support our local businesses.

I'm glad I made two of those four posts! Not only do I have nothing better to do, as I'm underemployed right now, but I enjoy helping others! In this case, I'm honored that I have nothing better to do than help these great guys and their great establishment grow!

I love seeing what other people post, too! I'm a positive person who believes in community-building and will totally go to wherever people say is great, providing it's not too expensive, as I'm positively sans steady cash flow right now. LOL!

So peeps, post away! All that posting keeps both UU and the businesses we all love in people's minds. Advertising works. (My ad friends know this. They make great money doing it for a living!) Plus, I'm sure local businesses love the free advertising that loyal customers on UU provide them.

By the by, a bunch of us patrons were bugging Ajay and Kampen about having a monthly movie night (again, no charge, no cover, just bring in your old kitschy movies like the book exchange they already have there and we patrons collectively pick one to play that night and do the MST3K thing to them). I'm thinking there's no law being broken if there's no charge and the movies come from the audience itself, right? Whatdya think?

Wanna come in and bug the guys about having movie night? LOL! They seem to be coming around. A couple of us are trying to score a projector....

    Cheers!
