Truc Lam Temple Celebrates

We passed by the Truc Lam Buddhist Temple at Wilson and Ashland today, and it looks like they're getting ready for their "Happy Birthday Buddha" festival any day now (click on the photo for a detailed look at the decorations). We've never been there, but have heard raves about it from other Uptowners. If anyone has any information and specifics on the festivities this year, we'd love for you to post it in the comments. (We found a website, but our Vietnamese is, um, a little rusty.)

We came across this video (by http://www.yochicago.com/) from a previous year's celebration: impressive!

  1. I admire what they've done with this building over the years! What was once a non-descript Masonic lodge has become a glorious beehive of color and activity, a great boost to the neighborhood. Love those "Buddha's Birthday" displays; sort of a twist on their Christian neighbors' Xmas decorations.

  2. Is it culturally insensitive to wish that they'd tone it down just a little? :)

  3. I remeber it when it was a masonic lodge. Years ago my dad belonged to it. Now I revisited it and as a tru Lam Temple I was so shocked by its great beauty. Being in our uptown area it certainly has added some tranquility and beauty. You should go and visit it and feel the magic powers it has to offer.

  4. This always makes me hungry, when I drive by.

It looks like a big bowl of candy, or Little Debbie snack cakes!

  5. I love what they do every year to decorate -- so cheerful and different from every other view we see!
