Some good news for the neighborhoood from a neighbor:
At 9:30 this morning the Cook County Sheriff arrived at 4446 North Magnolia to follow through on an eviction notice. The unit that was evicted has been the cause for literally dozens and dozens of 911 calls re: blatant drug dealing and gang activity.
I am sorry that an entire family now has no home, but it appears that now (at least in Woodlawn-managed properties) there is a consequence for permitting unlawful and dangerous behavior to occur in your home. I am only glad that this happened before someone was seriously hurt by the violence that inevitably accompanies such drug/gang activity. Hopefully the other families in this building can sleep a little easier knowing what is no longer serving as their "neighbor." I know I will.
The building manager has sincerely followed through on his promises, and is serious about evicting this unit. The sheriff's officers just left, the people who lived there now have an armful of possessions each and are off the property, and the management workers are already cleaning out their personal items (furniture, mattresses, everything).
VERY VERY enthusiastic kudos to Woodlawn Community Development Corporation, and particularly to the building manager who is hanging tough and taking care of business. We need more like him who truly have the safety of their residents and the community at heart.
Score one for the good guys!
Ahh, the Sunnyside and Magnolia area. It brings a tear to my eye to have it gone to Pot. No Pun intended. This link will take you to some of the former residents of that lovely area in days gone by.

My guess is that this landlord is following through because people, like the neighbor who reported this event, have kept the pressure on him to do so. Thankyou to everyone who has been active in helping to hold these problem tenants accountable. This is how a safe neighborhood is built. One small step at a time.
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for the family that now needs to find new housing, but nonetheless am very happy to see a landlord taking action like this. There are plenty of families in need of subsidized housing who DON'T harbor criminals. It is not too much to expect that as a threshold requirement
ReplyDeleteThis is a great start. Maybe it will send a message out to the other tenets who let their relatives hold the building hostage to gang activity. Maybe.
ReplyDeleteWow, the system does work... sometimes. I would say I'm sad to, but Im sure there were enough grownups there who knew what their relatives were doing and didn't put a stop to it for the sake of their kids. My sympathies only extend as far as the little ones. The other?... eff 'em
ReplyDeleteI just pray there isn't any retaliation.
ReplyDeleteThis is great news. I just drove past and all of their crap is lined up along the curb, I guess it would be too bad if it gets picked through and they become a victim of the crime of stolen property.
ReplyDeleteWe're hearing from the court advocates that this eviction has been an ongoing process for the past few months, started under HRC management and completed under Woodlawn. Congrats to both agencies for helping to make our community safer by removing the residents who have caused so much trouble.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't based on one incident, or one complaint. Rather, it's these residents' months and years of criminal activity and being unable to follow the rules set forth by CHA that led to their being evicted.
Apparently the family has known for months that this was going to happen and didn't make contingency plans about where to live or put their belongings. It's rough to see your stuff out by the curb, but accountability is the word... maybe a lesson can be learned.
There are plenty of good, law-abiding families who need housing. Gotta clear out the troublemakers to make room for the good'uns.
Abhay, I was thinking that too. I hate to say it but I wouldn't be surprised if a disgruntled drug dealer, pissed that his base of operation was taken away, takes out his frustration with a book of matches. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteIts great news to hear and thats one down and many more to go. I hope others who know about crap they have living in their building get the clue and do something about it too. Yes clean up and clean out the garbage and make room for the respectful people who go by the law and contribute to ward.......
ReplyDeleteCmon, I was hoping to pop in and see a post from Ron Durham explaining how I'm to blame for the evicted family because there isn't any midnight basketball.
ReplyDeleteWindy City Eagle I keep refreshing the page as well looking for one of Ron's stupid statements. Then I realized it is Friday night and him and his buddies probably got a lot of Cops to watch.
ReplyDelete'Ron' and 'Kenny' might both, be on holiday in Branson
ReplyDeleteMO? Not sure.
But I for one, am glad that at least some of 'Uptown's trouble makers' are being called out, and/or evicted.
GOOD RIDDANCE.
ReplyDeleteThat is great news. The bottom line is the family was harboring dangerous criminals - and quite possibley involved in the criminal activity themselves.
A note of thanks should also go out to Peter and Helen, for withouth their championing a new slum for Uptown without the backing of CHA this family will have a new place to call home very soon. And it will have easier access from all points north and south. Long live poverty!
ReplyDeleteI noticed today, that 2 squad cars were positioned on Magnolia, between the evicted person's stuff on the curb.
ReplyDeleteRefresh my memory.....what is the policy of the resident's of the forthcoming Wilson Yard complex?
If I recall, no background checks were needed?
I bring this up since I'm unaware of the facts. Will there be repeats of this scene, on a grand scale, at WY?
