Rad! Jesus People Opening Skate Shop

A reader writes in with the following info:

"I just came home from El Pollo Loco and walked by the JPUSA building at 920 W. Wilson and noticed a sign saying something about a skate shop opening soon. I wasn't able to get a photo but maybe another one of your readers could."

  1. It's a coffee/espresso shop. I walked by there the other day and woman let me come in and look at it.

  2. I heard about this awhile back. It is a recruitment tool to get young kids in to their organization. Where they "work" for room and board and all the protein free food they can muster.

This reminds me of the witches house in Hansel and Gretel. We all know how that turned out.

  3. Whatever Chip. That's not true. It is a coffee shop and no one will be forced to "work" or move in.

You always have to be so negative. Give it chance, it hasn't even opened yet.

  4. I think they're trying not to alienate the neighborhood too much these days. Perhaps they've realized that their in-your-face judgmental approach didn't work. Why last summer, Jon Trott admitted that public safety was important!

I knew some people in Cincinnati who were neighbors to some folks like that in their neighborhood. They still had their own beliefs but they were welcomed by the neighbors. JP here tend to blame their alienation on bigoted selfish condo owners without doing any self examination of their own.

  5. It wouldn't make sense to put in a skate shop there when there already is on up around 1300/1400 W Wilson. I am not sure how many skate shops one area could handle.

Another coffee shop on the other hand might be able to make it.

On a side note, the few times I have gone into the skate shop the guys in there were pretty cool.

  6. I gotta go with holey moley. JPUSA's biggest problem is that they support the wicked witch of the west, but beyond that, they're pretty harmless. Compared to an organization like North Action Justice League which is actually try to make the community worse in order to keep rent lower.

  7. kinda exciting looks like a skate/cafe fusion. it will be interesting to see how these two seemingly different cultures mix. fits right in with our neighborhood imo. many different cultures, many different types of people...mingling. :)

  9. In fairness try jpusa.org, exjpusahelp.com hasn't been update in years.

  10. Actually, exjpusahelp.com has only been up for about 2 years.

The info on the various links doesn't need to be updated. It's mainly first-hand accounts by former members, counter-cult experts and the Chicago Tribunes excellent piece of investigative reporting from a few years ago.

To quote Jerome Howard, a.k.a. "Curly"," Truth is stranger than fiction, judgey wudgey!"

  11. What happened to the reporter that did the Tribune piece?

  12. This isn't the place for a discussion about the validity of JPUSA's beliefs or a Tribune series about them. Exchanging links here is about as off-topic as I'm willing to see it go.

I respectfully request that further discussion, unless it has to do with the skateshop/ coffeeshop/ whatever kind of establishment is opening at 920 W Wilson, be taken to the UU Forum, which can be found under "Useful Links" on the sidebar of the front page.

  14. The guys at 1354 wilson have been working every day for three years now to try and make a success of it. And for another shop to push in so close is wrong, and is taking away the lively hood of the owners of wilson yard skate shop. And I do understand business is business. but the jesus people dont pay rent for the space they use, so for them splitting business is nothing, for the other skate shop it may mean the end
