Popeyes Shut Down Again By Health Department

Update: Here's why Popeye's was closed: Six Critical Violations, one Serious Violation, and 12 Minor Violations. Read it if you dare.

A reader sends us this photo and the following:

"Thought you would like to know that Popeyes at Broadway and Wilson has been shut down AGAIN by the health department. According to the green sign on the door it happened yesterday. The white paper above the green sign listed all of the violations but I couldn't remember them all. I think there were 7 or 8 violations. When is this place going to be shut down for good?"

UU Note: It has been less than a year since Popeyes was shut down the last time.

  1. I ate there for the first time a couple months ago. The bathroom, where presumably the employees are supposed to wash their hands, didn't have any soap or paper towels. I had to go to the front counter and request soap and towels. Made me VERY nervous about the sanitation conditions there, and I guess maybe those suspicions were correct after all.

Good news is, I lived to tell the tale.

  2. Interesting note on this location.

If you go to Popeye's site, and look up the 4604 Broadway location, you get the following message:

This location is currently not supported by the customer service center. Please contact the franchise office at: 847-529-7636

So, the responsibility for this store rests wholly on the franchisee.

Not feeling like ruining my Saturday calling the number and dealing with all of that mess, I dropped a note to Popeye's HQ with a few thoughts.

  3. I wish they would close it for good and open a Chipotle.

  4. Or even better yet close it for good and provide a public shitter so some of our neighbors do not have to poop and pee in the public way. I certainly would have to feel bad for the CTA person that has to clean it but what the hell they will get a good pension when they retire.

  5. Dammit. I love Popeye's and wish I could go to this place with confidence. While a Chipotle sounds great, having both in area, and clean, sounds ideal.

  6. It is clear that when the inspection came, their "papers" were not in order. They must have forgotten to put the benjamins in the envelope.

  7. I gotta admit. I have a high tolerance for not being ultra spiffy and am pretty forgiving of restaurants but the one time I actually went into this Popeye's and got food, I really had a hard time finishing as a looked around. I didn't really see anything specific (other than handling money and then food with no gloves) but something didn't sit right with me. ech.

  8. I tend not to trust the sanitary conditions of anything within several blocks of this location...

  11. well whats to say about a place that gets shut down twice a year and still retains the same crew. not only did i observe them not washing hands after using the register they are rude and there is no customer service! this was today 9-1-09 they have this poster in the door claims $2 Tuesdays 2pc mixed or not 1 biscuit for $1.99 *limit 2 *and states that for an extra breast it is more money (thats a second breast) the told me they don't care what the poster reads they charge .40 for 1 breast. i have had a problem with this place every time i go. i will never go again and if you value your health please don't go as well! if you have had any problems with this store then go to the public relations dept. on popeyes website and give them hell! lets make uptown better and shut this scummy ghetto place down already! how nanny times can a place get shut down a year with out closing for good?
