Blinded By The Light

A reader who lives near Wilson Yard sent in this photo of the spotlight that shines all night on the construction site ... and into the neighboring homes. This was taken around 8:45pm Wednesday evening.

  1. Come on everybody!!! Sing Along!!

You must be my lucky star
‘Cause you shine on me wherever you are
I just think of you and I start to glow
    And I need your light
    And baby you know

    Chorus:
Starlight, star bright first star I see tonight
Starlight, (star bright) make everything all right
Starlight, star bright first star I see tonight
    Starlight, (star bright) yeah

You must be my lucky star
‘Cause you make the darkness seem so far
And when I’m lost you’ll be my guide
I just turn around and you’re by my side

    Chorus...

Come on shine your heavenly body tonight
‘Cause I know you’re gonna make everything all right
Uh, come on shine your heavenly body tonight
‘Cause I know you’re gonna make everything all right

You may be my lucky star
But I’m the luckiest by far
You may be my lucky star
But I’m the luckiest by far

    Chorus...

Come on shine your heavenly body tonight
‘Cause I know you’re gonna make everything all right
Uh, come on shine your heavenly body tonight
‘Cause I know you’re gonna make everything all right

(You may be my lucky star, I’m the luckiest by far)
(You may be my lucky star, I’m the luckiest by far)
(You may be my lucky star) You may be my lucky star
(I’m the luckiest by far) What you do to me, baby
You know (You may be my lucky star)
But I’m the luckiest by far

Starlight, star bright first star I see tonight
Starlight, (star bright) make everything all right
Starlight, star bright first star I see tonight
    Starlight, (star bright)

    Starlight, star bright
    You make everything all right
What you do to me, baby
You’ve got to stay by my side tonight

(Starlight, star bright, starlight, star bright)
(Starlight, star bright, starlight, star bright)

    Starlight, star bright, baby
    Starlight, star bright
    Stay by my side tonight
What you do to me, baby
What you do, what you do to me, baby
    Stay by my side tonight

You may be my lucky star...

  2. I'm feeling a little loopy this morning.....

  3. A bit off topic BUT the news is filled with stories of increased taxes needed to keep Chciago schools open. Parents! Tax payers! If you live in a TIF district, your increased taxes will not go to the schools. The $$ will go into the TIF slush funds and the schools will get no new tax $$.

  4. The light will be defended as a tool to protect construction equipment.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Mayor doesn't eventually speak up for his boys @ Walsh Construction (such a dirty web that man weaves).

Too bad for the reader who sent that pic in, the spotlight will eventually be replaced with police lights. Preceded, of course, by escalating arguments, the sound of broken glass and eventually a gunshot, or 6 (depended on if the shooter's using a revolver or clip feed).

That's what we have, already - I can only imagine what will happen if Helen's demented views of "progress" and "diversity" are allowed to come to fruition.

  5. That song is going through my head over and over and over...

  6. What a LOVELY design for a Christmas card! Maybe as a fund-raiser for one of our local charities?

  7. Ahh, Helen: The Madonna of Uptown.

  8. Yeah, Gayle, nothing says The Season of Joy like an illegal construction tower and the sign for a dark and crowded Aldi store. ;-)

  9. You know my brother shot out a street light with a regular pump bb gun.

I don't know if this anecdote has anything to do with this thread, I just thought that I would share.

  10. Buenapk-

TIF funds went to fix up Stewart Elementary School and Arai/Uplift.

What the hell are you talking about?

  11. By the way ... my mind stopped accepting Madonna songs a loooong time ago.

However, I can't get Manfred Mann's Earth Band out of my head.

Thanks UU, for the silicon sister with her manager mister rerun.

  12. There is hope for UU and BPN. Read all about the anonymous blogger who will not be forced out by judges.

  13. Yo,

There's a few folks who really geek out about Chi-town stats on this blog.

I was wondering if anyone had ever run into similar stats (in terms of occupancy volume and low income status) in other neighborhoods?

I'd just like to understand an existing scenario versus all the anecdotes people spout on these comment pages.

  14. [Defendent's lawyer] Salisbury said no "reasonable" person would interpret them as fact

    And there's your problem.

We're not dealing with reasonable people.

We're dealing with opportunistic and truth-impaired people (dare I say "cowards") who want to use tax money, and skate permit laws (not to mention trampling ethics conditions) to pay for their personal objectives which will serve only themselves and a handful of others, not the majority of Uptown, for the ultimate goal of satisfying their own fragile egos.

  15. GG. You don't have a grasp of how TIFs work. The city says any
,I repeat ANY, increases in tax revenues does not go into the general funds BUT are diverted in the TIF. EX. If the TIF is declared on 1/1/02, all $$ generated by NEW tax increases, for the next 23 years, would go into the TIF NOT the general city funds. Monies may have been given to the schools by Shiller but it would be far far less than if there was no TIF. Understand?

  16. Chuck,

from that link you posted the Judge has not made a decision yet.

The model is one Liskula Cohen.

Apparently someone started a website that brands her both a skank and a whore.

The stuff on the website is juvenile and somewhat offensive, but I doubt it's actionable.

She is a public figure and seems to be enjoying the publicity.

Now if anonymous blogger said something direct like "Person A has sex for money, works at the corner of Broadway and Montrose, and has a cocaine problem" that might be actionable. Unless they were talking about me, then it would be true. Baby needs a new pair of shoes and I do what I gotta do.

Saying a public figure is ugly or her mom dresses her funny is not legal reason for a legitimate lawsuit. It's commentary. The first of the "Bill of Rights" clearly applies. The skank and whore comments are juvenile, but I suspect the court will find for the defendant.

If I wanted to say the 51st Ward alderman taking campaign money from a developer is corrupt I can do that. That's opinion. If I wanted to say said developer gave a full sized Blimp to the Alderman to fish off Monroe Harbor that might be actionable or it might be satire. If I said a city contractor paid for the education of an aldercritters daughter and it wasn't true that would be actionable.

Suits involving those kind of damages and liability need to be very specific. Someone stating the IrishPirate is an idiot is find and prolly twue. Someone stating the IrishPirate robbed the First National Bank of Uptown with an AK-47 on December 5th of last year would be talking to my law firm, Dewey Cheatem and Howe.

  17. One stat, which is very easy to remember, s*parade is that 60640 the WY zip is in the 100 most impoverished zips in the state and some genius thinks it's a good idea to bring in more poverty.

  18. @Green Giant:

TIF funds went to fix up Stewart Elementary School and Arai/Uplift.

What the hell are you talking about?

This is sleight of hand at best. Stewart got a "campus park" with the Alderbeast throwing menu money at the project since all the TIF funds were sucked up by WY and Dan Burke for low income housing.

That isn't "fixing up the school" or buying new equipment, like up to date computers, or wiring the school for networking or internet access, or weatherizing or insulating walls and windows for energy savings, or anything of that sort.

Instead of doing things that make sense, like hiring more teachers and reducing class sizes, or buying new textbooks, Stewart got some grass, trees, and a wrought iron fence.

Please elaborate on exactly what Arai got from the TIF, as my memory fails me on this point.

  19. Hmm.

I don't seem to recall money for Arai being in the redevelopment agreement.

Was it in there all along, or did the Alderbeast sneak it in with some other bullshit amendments?

    Hugh?

  20. I wonder if I'm in the minority.......but I SERIOUSLY have no idea what is going on at Broadway and Montrose. I don't understand why, as a resident of Uptown for over 17 years, why such a murky cloud hovers over this development. I can't even see an 'updated' depiction of this project?

  21. The lights were off and no work was being done last night when I passed by around 9:30.

  22. LOL - who says this blog doesn't make a difference?

The puppet masters are reading and responding.

    Awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wasn't that "park" also a result of re-configuring the streets so that there was direct access into the WY Property by the Aldi?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Why the hell would they need a light to protect the construction equipment when there is no crime in Uptown. Just ask Helen.
